Help connect Tavistock
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Tavistock’s Slow Ways.

Like all routes across the moor - even on the Dartmoor Way High Moor Route there is no signage, so an ability to navigate is required, particularly in poor visibility. the route avoids Merrivale so unfortunately there are no refreshment stops available....

Tim Ryan added Tavpri three, a new walk from Tavistock to Princetown
Walk this routeI think it to be a good option if you are prepared to cross open moorland, rather than take the long road walk. Like tavpri(1) there is a good refreshment option in Merryvale. The Dartmoor Inn....

Tim Ryan added Tavpri two, a new walk from Tavistock to Princetown
Walk this routeI walked the route in good visibility and found no difficulty crossing Whitchurch Down to Merryvale....

A nice exit and access to Tavistock town centre using the canal the park and a beautiful riverside path....

There is quite a long section of road walking required between Harford Bridge and Tavistock....
Tim Ryan
Lovely walk, plenty off road and the country roads we did walk on were very quiet. Definitely recommend this route....

The map for this route indicates veering off this route near to Yelverton, but we couldn't see the advantage of doing this, and it wasn't obvious where to leave and rejoin the main route....

Slow Ways Cristie added Calstav one, a new walk from Calstock to Tavistock
Walk this routeThis is a very scenic route which follows the Drake trail which is part of the national cycle network. As a result the route is easy and safe with good quality track under foot. Being on an established trail means it's easy to navigate and well signposted....

I walked this route in reverse starting in Yelveton and walking to Tavistock....
Lara
I walked most of this route but deviated at the Tavistock end by going up Green Lane to reach the golf course (from Mount Tavy Road, north of this route)....

The way is easy to follow and doesn't involve too much challenge in that direction (the other is more climbing than descent) A few ladder stiles and serious muddy spots make this a truly country walk and difficult for my large dog despite lots of it being well marked and easy road or grass path....
UrsulaM
This is good if you are on foot and want to get away from traffic but is not the most direct route available. It can also get quite muddy in winter months!...
TravellingLines
This route follows the National Cycle Trail from Tavistock to Yelverton. It is almost entirely on tarmac and is regularly used by cyclists and walkers alike. I'm going to suggest an alteration to the start because of an unnecessary detour around the college....
TravellingLines
The route follows a narrow single file, windy road which has no space to walk off road, and as it is one of the main points to cross the river Tamar there are many large vehicles and lorries frequently using this road. There are cars that use this road but it is only one way and the cars are coming up the road behind you and it is a wide road so it fine to walk....
Lara
Beautiful hike through open moorland and along two rivers. Not accessible....

UrsulaM added Tavyel two, a new walk from Tavistock to Yelverton
Walk this routeAt SX36857 80296 it crosses the Tamar river at Greystone Bridge which has no pavement and is traffic light controlled for vehicles. At the Greystone Bridge the route turns immediately left to pick up a little used footpath....

The first bit out of Tavistock to Harvest Home is really interesting. No pavement/verge between Harvest Home and Gunnislake so you have to really aware of making sure you are visible on the road so cars can give you space....
