Description
This alternative route is to avoid all potential barriers, bridges with steps and narrow kissing gates. It does follow a pavement/cycle path next to a quite busy road at first, but then follows the Letchworth Garden City Greenway which is off road and has a good surface.
Leave Stotfold on the same route as Stobal 1, go under the underpass and continue along Norton Road. (see photo, which is facing Stotfold)
Cross the road where the cycle path crosses the road.
Follow the cycle path/pavement until the junction with the Garden City Greenway, when you have to cross to the east side of the road and join the Greenway off road path. This has a slightly bumpy but firm surface, suitable for wheelers.
Continue until the Greenway reaches Nortonbury Lane Turn right onto the lane (this coincides with Stobal 1)
In 50 metres, leave Stobal 1, turn left to continue on the Greenway through a stable yard.
Follow the Greenway until it meets Norton Road (Baldock). There is a single gate here.
Turn left and cross the A1 motorway. Turn left through the wide metal kissing gate into Ivel Springs nature reserve.
Follow the path through the nature reserve as with Stobal 1. (This section can be muddy in really wet weather. If necessary it is possible to stay on Norton Road into Baldock, but there is no pavement)
At the crossing of two paths take the path going straight on through a tunnel under the railway line (Stobal 1 turns left at this point)
The path meets Icknield Way, turn left.
After 50m turn right into Church Street, walk the length of Church Street to the centre of Baldock

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

12 Sep 2023I walked this from Baldock to Stotfold in two stages camping g at Radwell a little over midway. The dark tunnel under the railway on the edge of Baldock was a bit concerning but very short. It was then over the A1 and onto cycle path through Radwell meadows. I followed this then turned down through the woods to my campsite. You can also go a bit further through the village of Radwell to Baldock Services on the A1 if you need a dose of civilisation. The next day I did the reverse walk to the cycleway and the short walk unto Stotfold. Nice coffee shop there with personable owner and launderette next door which was a godsend for me on a long walk.
