Help connect Baldock

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Baldock’s Slow Ways.

Nearly all the route is off road, except for pavements in the towns and a bit of road walking through the (quiet) villages....

I walked most of this route today from Roystonto Baldock, there is a part that is not a public right of way that will need to be amended. Several kissing gates between Therfield and Kelsall. A quiet but very fast road to be navigated....

This route is a lovely route through beautiful countryside with minimal road walking. I walked from Walkern to Baldock so I walked down the hill into Baldock....

Walk this route

A direct, but not particularly interesting, route along reasonable footpaths and pavements. Much of the route passes through an industrial area. Both towns are worth visiting but check the transport situation, particularly at the weekend, where you can wait up to 2 hours for a bus!...

Walk this route

Good route, footpaths and some urban pavements mostly, small amount on country roads without pavement, bit not too much. Some lovely views around Weston in particular. I followed the route in November on sunny day after quite a lot of rain, and surprisingly it wasn't too muddy....

Walk this route

A pleasant enough walk, particularly once you leave the concrete of Stevenage and rapidly find yourself crossing rolling fields. There's a mixture of walking along pavements, country roads, and muddy paths with some beautiful views....

This is a very rural walk, through mainly arable land, some woodland, some fields with livestock, along bridleways and footpaths....

A direct route out of Stevenage and through lovely, gently rolling countryside to Weston and then to Baldock. Most of it very rural, on footpaths and bridleways, some on country lanes with no pavement....

Walk this route

A generally nice and varied walk, although with short stretches alongside and crossing busy roads; there are pavements. There are quite a few kissing gates, wooden bridges and steps. The walk through Radwell meadows is very pleasant....

I don't think the previous reviewer followed the slow ways suggested route - since part of it is NOT a public right of way (see survey) and necessitated a 1.5 mile detour. However, it is pleasant, open, rolling countryside. Mainly arable land, skirting little villages, good views, could be exposed in wind/rain....

Easy path climbing out of Baldock into farmland and passing through the village of Weston, and hamlet of Halls Green - mostly threading between arable fields with occasional cow grazing. In winter the clay soil is poorly drained so it can be very muddy. Three short road sections....

Walk this route

The route goes through the urban landscape of the industrial area of Letchworth Garden City, which can be busy at times, before crossing the A1(M) via a foot bridge and terminating in the centre of the pretty town of Baldock, some distance from the bus stops in High Street and the railway station in Station Road....

The exception is when crossing West Avenue/Pepys Way to get to the park in Baldock; on one side of the street, there is an insufficent dropped kerb that would probably be difficult for wheelchairs, although Hopewell Road and Pepys Way might provide a sufficient alternative route....
