Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I was walking the entire SWCP and this Slow Way followed part of it. I agree with the previous reviewer that there's more distance involved than the stats say. Sticking strictly to the SWCP, it's almost 42km to Mevagissey, and the short-cuts don't reduce that by 10km. You don't really start this walk at St Mawes, but first you have to get a ferry to Place, so you're unlikely to be walking before 0930. While I've enjoyed this stretch of coast in the past, I've covered the distance over two days, usually taking a break at Portloe. This time, I covered most of the distance to Portloe in drizzly rain and mist, but I had better weather onwards to Mevagissey. While there are plenty of ups and downs along the way, for the most part they aren't too steep and they're mostly quite short. It's a pity to omit Nare Head and Dodman Point, but if you wanted to complete this walk in a day then that would certainly get you to the end quicker. I arrived in Mevagissey during Feast Week, when boats in the harbour were decorated.

(I missed the other reviewer - One Woman Walks - by several weeks. She had already passed Taunton on her way to John o'Groats before I even set off following the SWCP from Minehead.).

One Woman Walks

A route that follows the coastal path for most of the way.
I had two issues with this route, one is that the gpx file is very lazily traced onto the map, obviously I wouldn't expect it to follow every small curve of the coast but it misses a lot of even medium level detail which means that the actual distance covered is a lot more than 20 miles. The other is that the coastal path is far from direct and shouldn't be used when there's a better alternative.
I actually took a detour inland at Caerhays Castle and missed out Dodman point and the whole headland.
There is an excellent, well walked footpath that goes inland from Caerhays Castle to Treveor to Gorran Churchtown and then curves north into a beautiful wooded valley and comes out in Portmellon. I suggest that as an alternative, more direct route.
