Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

As others have said before me, this is a lovely route, albeit with some definitely rugged sections which means it's not completely suitable for everyone. I deviated slightly from the route because I was completing the Saints Way, so went above/around Polkerris and took a less urban route into Fowey at the end.

It's worth noting that at Treminion the route goes through a working farmyard, but there are Saints Way signs on the buildings so as long as you don't mind chickens round your feet, be bold!

Several pubs en route and a nice village shop in Tywardreath. Plenty of food and accommodation options in Fowey but obviously very busy on an August afternoon, despite the mizzle!.

Really great slow way - agree with all the previous reviews.

There are steep sections - so unfortunately not suitable for all. I do wonder if an alternative that drops into Par via the Saints Way, rather than using the coast path, might be viable - and possibly even shorter and more direct. But that doesn’t detract at all from this route, which is fabulous.

I walked this route from St Blazey and it is a great route showcasing coast, farmland and historic town. It dips in and out of the Saints Way but be mindful to hug the coastpath between Par and Polkeris and take a more direct route into Fowey if you wish to stay on the slowway. The coastpath is rugged, there are many styles and some steep steps throughout. The entrance to the saints way in St Blazey is easily missed, it looks like someones driveway but there is a wooded path up there. The cross country paths are pretty intuitive so Enjoy.

This is a very nice walk - scenic and well-marked along well-trodden paths and quiet roads. There are some steps and a couple of stone-slab crossings over walls.
It mostly follows the Saints Way from Fowey, then joins the coast path just above Polkerris; you could stay on the Saints Way if you’re happy to bypass Polkerris. This is more direct, involving a stretch of road and fields. It joins the coast near Polmear at the end of Par Beach.

Now this is what Slow Ways is all about!

Quiet, leafy country lanes, good quality and well signposted footpaths, rolling hills, photogenic coastline and good views. You really feel like you are getting one-up on other modes of transport.

I diverted for the last mile or so, just the outskirts of Par and St Blazey but it's mostly residential streets and they are very unlikely to pose any problems.

Can you get a bus back from Fowey to St. Blazey/Tywardreath?

I know this is two years on from your question - but yes you can get a bus to Tywardreath (I did yesterday!) As of August 2023 the no.24 goes through Tywardreath and then via Par railway station towards St Austell. The no.25 goes through Par but not directly past the station. You'd have to change in Par for a bus to St Blazey but it's about ½ a mile walk.

Forgot to say - the bus stops in Fowey are quite a way up the hill from the river and town centre.
