Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

09 Jul 2022This is almost a five star route. The clay trails are excellent but have a lot of loose material and there is an anti vehicle stone placed at one of the entrances on the Wheal Martyn Trail. Steps over the railway bridge are also very steep.
It is in fact a lovely route across the clay district but be aware of a simple updated work-around leaving St Austell (see map in photos).
Cross the railway bridge and head up the hill passing the first three exits to your left (that includes two entrancecs to the Noth Hill Estate and Palace Gardens). Turn left into a street marked Trevarthan Road and also Private Road, it does access a footpath. Follow this path to the anti vehicle bar onto Menacuddle Lane, walk down menecuddle lane, at the junction head downhill and follow right into Tremena Hill. This is where the marked Slowways path resumes.
Look for the national cycle route two waymarked footpath - this is where the best begins.
Keeping to the main path is pretty straightforward but when you come to a three way junction follow the wheal martyn path straight ahead passing a gate (you are heading away from Wheal martyn now).
The path will eventually lead you to a road bridge, cross the road and follow the adjacent path to Penwithick. You may be led onto the lower trails; if so take the path up to the next car parking area, that leads you onto an older stretch of road that will cover the last bit.
