Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

05 Feb 2023 Winter

We walked from Mevagissey to St Austell on a sunny February 2023. The route as a whole was very straightforward to follow, following National Cycle Network 3 pretty much all the way. It was very accessible with no styles and the only road walking was towards the end as you enter St Austell which I think would be unavoidable given you are walking into a town. The path near the Lost Gardens of Heligan appeared to have been recently resurfaced and widened so was very easy under foot. This then met the coast and clay trail. There were a number of cyclists as you got closer to St Austell so make sure when walking that you are aware they might be behind you. There were limited opportunities for stopping for food and drink with the main ones being in Mevagissey and St Austell but there was a sign to the Rebellion Roast house enroute which appeared from the sign to do food. A lovely walk, would recommend it!.

I walked this route from Mevagissey to St Austell. Both ends of the route have plenty of ammenities and onward travel options, especially in St Austell. No other major settlements are passed through on the route.

This is a very pleasant route to walk, almost entirely following a national cycle network route. The surface varies from tarmac to gravel to wooded path to pavement. The main pro of this route is the separation from roads and pleasant walk along the St Austell river. Some sections are popular with runners, cyclists and dog walkers.

There were no access issues or trouble navigating. The only tricky bit is entering the outskirts of St Austell. As you approach the south end of the town, you feel a bit unwelcome as a walker. The car becomes king and crossing the busy double roundabout before heading uphill to the town centre isn't the most pleasant of experiences.

Overall, this should definitely join the Slow Ways network, it's an easy, straightforward and enjoyable route.

Walked this route from Mevagissey to St Austell on a glorious winters day in February 2023. Plenty of bus and train options from St Austell and you can travel the return trip between St Austell and Mevagissey by bus too. Lots of options for food in both Mevagissey and St Austell. The majority of the route is on very well maintained easy going paths/cycle way and navigation is straight forward, though there are hills to contend with at either end. The road sections are either on very small quite lanes or have pavements. From a practicality and accessibility standpoint this route is 5* and I may have been swayed by having just walked the road heavy Probus to Mevagissey route but it felt like it somewhat lacked the interest or variety from a scenery point of view that might have had me scoring it a 5* overall. Certainly no changes needed though and overall a pleasant route.

23 Oct 2022 Autumn

I walked this route on a sunny autumn day and it was gorgeous. I walked (with my dog) the route in reverse, from Mevagissey to St Austell. This route follows (except in St Austell itself) National Cycle Route 3, so route finding is easy and the trail is very accessible, either hard grit or tarmac throughout, with no gates, stiles, walls or any other obstructions. I didn't really need to include wayfinding arrows on the photos, as it's pretty obvious where to go, following the Cycle Route 3 signs.

The route is really in two halves, your first hour from Mevagissey is up and over a hill, along the edge of the Heligan Estate. If walking in the Autumn, allow yourself time to gather windfall Chestnuts as you drop down the hill here.

The remainder of the walk is pretty level, running parallel with the Pentewan Road and White River in towards St Austell. The route does occasionally cross the main road or side roads, but all pretty safe with care.

It's worth bearing in mind that as you pass the "Welcome to St Austell" sign, you stop following the Cycle Route 3 signs and walk straight along the pavement into St Austell, crossing a busy roundabout junction. If you're hungry from your walk, there is McDonalds, KFC, Costa and a Neills bakery here. If you're on a bike or mobility scooter, it might be worth continuing along Cycle Route 3 - this is a slightly longer route to the station, but a bit safer than the busy roundabout and town centre, which is also where the route is at it's narrowest. If you do continue following the given route into St Austell, go past the modern White River complex (with Wilko sign on it) and you'll find St Austell's independent cafes on your next left.

Lovely walk from St Austell to Mevagissey. There are a few occasions the actual route deviates from the GPS for different reasons, but following the signs there is a track most of the way through. Occasionally moves onto a pavement alongside the main road but soon moves off again. Sections follow a lovely stream and woodlands alongside to explore.

This is an easy route to complete, one climb shortly before descending into Mevagissey, with a lovely harbour and coffee/cakes to enjoy once you're there.

Although I had some bad weather walking this, there are some countryside views after the climb, that I'm sure on a nice day would be great!.
