Description
This takes an alternative start from Stalham more inland to avoid the long stretch on the road to Sea Palling per Stacai One. This passes through Potter Heigham and uses the Weavers Way for a good part through the edge of the Broads. It follows the river out towards the coast a way before getting to West Somerton and joining the path of Stacai One from Winterton. This misses some of the SSI but could detour slightly if interested in the area. Plenty of facilities along the route and could do a slight detour to Martham if needed along that stretch but facilities available en route

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

25 Jun 2024This was walked as Stalham to Caister on a weekday afternoon on a sunny summer day. It's a varied route with different Norfolk landscapes - rivers, broads, beach..and can be sort of split into sections. Stalham to Potter Heigham to Winterton to Caister. The first stretch is after pavements in Stalham along (mostly) quieter lanes with tall hedges and trees giving shade even in bright sunshine. At Hickling it got busier but the route passes close to Hickling Broad and there are some behind hedges type footpaths nearer there which made it safer. It was a bit of a detour as there was a shorter route but it did pass a couple of places for refreshment (pubs) and cut the only stretch of the route that was a bit busier down. The road south of Hickling was a bit wider than other roads - 1.5-2 cars wide and some cars were going a bit uncomfortably fast as a walker on the road. This stretch was just over 2km long. There were verges and most drivers were courteous. This stretch is the weavers way longer distance path so I expected it to be better than it was. Having also walked route 1 - this was still a lot better than the busy road to Sea Palling and a lot shorter. I don't know what this would be like at a busier time but it was ok. It was also quite pretty in places to the side. After this point to Potter Heigham it was easy and nearly all car free. At Potter Heigham you do have to cross the A149 but it has a centre island and was then relatively safe. From Potter Heigham this then transitioned to riverbank for quite a way towards the coast and then again some quieter lanes and footpath to join where route 1 is at Winterton. The Riverbank path was a bit uneven underfoot and in places a little overgrown. From Winterton, it's then down the coast path effectively to Caister. I didn't re-walk this last part from Winterton but having walked it in all seasons it's an easy navigation. I wouldn't take a buggy or other wheels on this route - mostly due to a couple of field edge paths, sand and the Riverbank path. There are facilities for breaks along the way in Stalham, Hickling, Potter Heigham, Winterton and a few places just off the path as well as Caister. There are public transport links between these places - perhaps easiest Stalham to Potter and Winterton and Caister. This is quite a bit longer than version 1 but could be broken down. I also think that a third version of the route could take the south direction out of Stalham like this route and then skirt to the north of Hickling broad on lanes and then pitch across to Sea Palling and then be the same as route 1. Like a lot of these Norfolk routes they are quite limited given all the waterways and not a lot of crossings. There also aren't a lot of footpaths.
