23 Jan 2023The route soon left the village of Sabden along a farm track which gradually climbed the flank of a hill, affording nice views back to Sabden, and forward across fields (with someone tobogganing when I was there) to the wooded slope. Opposite a barn the route crossed a field straight uphill on an unmarked path. This arrived at a very short isolated stone wall with a footpath sign close to it, which pointed steeply uphill through the woods. It was lovely here, with pretty views, but was a bit of a climb!
There was a stile onto the road which had no pavement, but felt reasonably safe. This short section of road went over the brow of the hill so the views changed. Soon after turning into the woods the other side, there was a gate onto the Gallops saying Keep Out. However after following the wall at the edge of the woods, there was soon a gate through to access the fenced off footpath. Technically, you can still walk diagonally across the paddocks following the PRoW as marked on the OS Map, however it is much easier just to follow the path the owners would like you to follow, even though it is very muddy in places. The views were just as good.
There were a couple of well-worn footpaths across the next field, which contained gorse, down to a short quiet road crossing with stiles. One more field, and I arrived at tennis courts on the outskirts of Simonstone and Read. I needed to go through a couple of gates and right past the courts, then a vehicle track led to residential streets and the end point.
I really enjoyed this route - short, easy, direct, and with wonderful views.
