Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

13 Apr 2024 (edited 14 Apr 2024)Walked from Rothwell to Kettering. Mostly fine and fairly easy to follow, but the stile on the north side of the A14 is missing - I opted to climb a locked gate. A little more use would make the path from Rothwell to Thorpe Malsor a good one, but I suspect most locals never cross the A14.
From Rothwell we follow streets into a Recreation Ground, then follow the left hand side of the park on grass to the bridge over Slade Brook. We cross and slant left up the hill on a path that starts clearly but deteriorates - the exit to Rothwell Lodge is awkward because of a missing stile and an overgrown bank beyond it, so it may be easier to climb the gate to the left as I did. We pass under the A14 - watch out for the path left beyond the bridge that avoids a short section of walking on the verge of the main road. The field path beyond is little used but the stiles were easy to spot and in good condition. A section through a little wood was slightly obstructed by a fallen tree, but we soon reach the road to Thorpe Malsor, a charming village but no shops or pubs here.
We continue across a couple of fields to rejoin the road, then take a field path straight on at a T junction. This field was churned up by horses. The route through the second field has been straightened and now passes between fences through another horse pasture. We then pass under the A14 by the river, then look out for the signed path right that crosses the river and follows the main road south before turning left uphill through a new housing estate. Keep a close eye on the map and the route through the estate will reveal itself.
Eventually we emerge on Northampton Road, which we follow under the railway and across the A6003 (if you want to stay on the left side of Northampton Road, there is a pelican crossing here slightly left of the junction - this is preferable to crossing the main road without lights). We then follow Sheep Street left into the Market Place then branch right to the Kettering meeting point at the bus station.

21 Jul 2022Walked this route from Kettering to Rothwell and back again. However I did started/finished nearer the end of Kettering, not at the beginning of the route.
There was one style which had a step of about 2.5 feet which made it difficult to cross. There was a three-bar fence to climb as there was no style.
Walking along the side of the A14 it was very overgrown.
I felt the walk was safe as any roads were quiet. There were tunnels under two of the main roads.
This may not be suitable for persons with limited mobility due to the reasons mentioned above.
