Description
This route is the same as Ripell One for much of the way. The difference is that it stays on the road (pavement throughout) between Old Ripponden Road and Bowers Mill, passing through the small village of Barkisland (refreshments). Suitable for anyone wanting a more direct route (about 1km shorter) without the detour through steep fields, e.g. in wet weather.
After the climb out of Ripponden the route stays with the road through Barkisland, descending to the valley of the Black Brook. Even though it is a small narrow valley, there is a huge old mill building at the bottom of the road. At Bowers Mill there are excellent refreshments. Follow a path alongside the Black Brook to the outskirts of Elland. There is another climb and descent at Elland before arriving at a pleasant meeting point with refreshments nearby

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

01 Apr 2022This option is based on Ripell One, but stays on roads between Ripponden and Bowers Mill, instead of diverting along woodland and farm tracks and paths. From Bowers Mill to Elland it is as Ripell One. Overall it is shorter and more straightforward to walk than Ripell One.
I walked from Ripponden to Elland.
Leave Ripponden climbing up to the top of the hill. Turn off the B road onto a quiet road, which descends through Barkisland village all the way to the Black Brook valley. There is pavement all the way, and some refreshment stops in Barkisland, which may come in handy when walking uphill!
At the valley bottom there is a huge old mill building, I imagined it providing employment for 100s of people in the past.
Turn left and continue (still pavement) about 400 metres to Bowers Mill, where there is shopping, a hotel and bar, and a very nice friendly cafe where I had lunch, right next to the path so I didn’t have to go looking for it. At this point the route has met up with Ripell One and now both routes continue on the same path.
After lunch I followed the Black Brook through meadows (and some industrial units too, where the path is clearly marked), all the way to Elland outskirts. There was one awkward place where a short bridge is made of various boulders, I needed to scramble it, although a more confident balancer would have no problem stepping over it. This was the trickiest part of the walk for me to negotiate.
At Elland the route goes uphill, and then down again through some pleasant residential streets. This is preferable to staying in the valley bottom where it becomes busy and industrial.
The meeting point is a quiet spot by the main street with benches. I found a decent bar across the road for refreshment.
I was surprised to find Elland has no railway station. There are buses to Halifax, Huddersfield, Brighouse, or of course you can walk!.
