Help connect Elland
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Elland’s Slow Ways.

An easy to walk route, with a few shallow steps leading over a bridge, and a partly overgrown field where I imagine the ground could be very wet in inclement weather. Passing through Cromwell Bottom Nature Reserve, where there is a cafe open on a Tuesday and Thursday and adjoining exceptionally clean toilets. Very peaceful walk along the canal....

I walked this route from Huddersfield to Elland, it starts out of Huddersfield, quite urban but nice. This part is steep, overgrown and narrow, until you cross a small lane when the views get better! When walking this from Elland to Huddersfield, look out and take the right hand path when crossing the small lane, there are two paths that come out close together. Behind the houses is still a bit overgrown (look out for berries, yum!), but the golf course has a clear path across the middle and is easy going....

I walked Elland to Sowerby Bridge and it's very straight forward though there were some restoration work being done so there were some diversions. Only downside of the route is the huge amount of fly tipping that is around the route....

The walk out of Huddersfield not the most pleasant part of the route - certainly not the pleasantest part of Huddersfield. Once you reach Cowcliffe Hill the route is better and the climb out of town gives some great views of the town. There is one slight deviation round a building just before descending onto the B6114 but it is nothing major....

Route works okay…..footpath from SE126 203 to SE123 206 is not obvious on the ground and may be muddy if livestock are present in the fields. SE120 205 to SE 119 206 is a steep downhill about 200m in length on grass/mud, which may be challenging to less confident users....

I set off to walk this route from Ripponden to Elland. Apart from having to backtrack and reroute I enjoyed this route, especially the unexpected mill complex at Bowers Mill and seeing how even a small valley supported big mills....

Turn off the B road onto a quiet road, which descends through Barkisland village all the way to the Black Brook valley. At this point the route has met up with Ripell One and now both routes continue on the same path. After lunch I followed the Black Brook through meadows (and some industrial units too, where the path is clearly marked), all the way to Elland outskirts....

I found it to have an unnecessary climb out of Elland up a steep, busy A road - unnecessary because it is followed immediately by a descent, and it is easier just to walk round at town level, instead of going up and down....

Apart from the very beginning near SB station this is an excellent mostly flat, some tow path cobbles, some tarmac, enjoyable canal side path....

I walked EllHud One from Huddersfield Railway Station to Elland town centre on the afternoon of June 16th, 2021....
