08 Oct 2023 (edited 31 Aug 2024)I followed Rintot Two in reverse, from Totton to Ringwood.
I feel a disappointing feature of this route (and indeed the other Rintots) is where it meets and follows the A337 for around 200m. It is a National Speed Limit road and sees a lot of fast-moving traffic owing to being one of the main arteries for motorists travelling in and out of the New Forest.
Approaching as I did from the east, while I could see that I needed to cross the road, I had no idea what was waiting on the other side and whether it would be suitable. As it happens below the level of the road there is a wide verge, though it is has not been designed with any pedestrian or wheel traffic in mind. I was fortunate that the grass had recently been mown, but still it was quite uneven and had several perpendicular gutters dug into the earth along its length to capture run-off from the road - had the grass not been cut I doubt I would have noticed then until upon them.
Altogether I felt quite out of place on foot and considered backtracking before deciding to push ahead for the sake of this review.
Potential diversions do exist, either tracking north via Bartley and following Beechwood Road as it crosses A337, or south via Lyndhurst. (The latter could also serve as a natural stopping point breaking the route in two if suitable in- and out-bound paths exist.) At the time of writing however I haven't explored either of these detours, and moreover this would increase the route's considerable distance further still.
However, this section just accounts for around 0.5% of the route. To give fair representation and due credit to the rest of Rintot Two:
1) Where it does follow the Forestry England tracks (marked as cycle routes in Ordinance Survey maps) it was very easy to navigate and should be suitable for a variety of users.
2) The route travels through lots of varied scenery and terrain, so it never felt dull.
3) It does involve a high proportion of on-road walking compared to other Slow Ways I have reviewed, though the majority of these are the quiet country kind with little traffic.
4) As this is a New Forest route, expect to encounter the native ponies and livestock such as pigs, cows and sheep (I did all but the lattermost).
5) Leaving Totton itself wasn't nearly as unpleasant as I'd expected. The pavement/cycle path along the A336 is for the most part wide with some sections separated from the road by a verge.
6) To caveat the previous point, the final roundabout before reaching Netley Marsh where the A336 and A326 intersect was busy with fast-moving vehicles and no traffic lights, so I had be confident when crossing. It might not be suitable for everyone.
7) The footpath section of Rossiters Lane was quite muddy and in parts overgrown when I followed it. Depending on the season, users might wish to detour this section taking Bourne Lane/Road to the north instead.
8) There is no shortage of bridle/livestock gates throughout.
9) It also has two old narrow footbridges, one crossing Ringwood Ford Bottom and another on the Right of Way approaching Ringwood. The latter resolves to a narrow 50m-long footpath studded with tree roots and a stile access.
10) The approach to the New Forest and Brockishill Enclosure had a section which was muddy with lots of fallen branches and other debris.
11) Arriving at Brockishill Enclosure the path was not clearly delineated, such that I found myself veering off of it before reaching the forestry tracks a little further along than intended.
12) There is a pub in Minstead almost at the halfway mark which could make for a natural stopping point, as well as a bench in the village green.
13) Likewise not long after Acres Down Farm could serve as a stopping point which serves cream teas between April and September.
14) Leaving the Highland Water Enclosure and taking the road under the A31 feels a little strange as a non-motorist, but the road is wide, visibility is good, and vehicles were infrequent and seemed to drive with care.
15) As long as you don't mind the constant sound fast-moving traffic nearby, the track which runs parallel to the A31 was quite novel and had wide vistas of the heather-covered plains to the north. Some sections were fairly uneven and others steep with loose stones/gravel, however.
16) Ringwood itself was quite uneventful which was most welcome by that point, albeit following the pavement/cycle path over the A31 was slightly disconcerting - though clearly the locals are quite at peace with it.
In sum, I do regret not being able to fully recommend this route, however I do think it illustrates a need which is lacking in this part of the New Forest – that is an obvious way to safely cross the main roads north of Lyndhurst.

07 Nov 2023Hi Charles, thanks so much for this. I'm going to come and try Ringwood — Totton. Do you know which of the tracks from Linford to Kings Garden might work.. and if so, if the rest of the route should be OK?

11 Nov 2023Hi Dan,
Thanks for the feedback! Glad to hear the review has been helpful.
Do you mean between Linford and King's Garn, the latter as marked on OS maps here - https://osm.org/go/eui2hM5M9--?layers=N&m=?
As this was the first time I visited this part of the forest I couldn't vouch for how Rintot One would compare to it. I would be very curious to find out though - in particular seeing what difference crossing the A31 earlier (if starting from Ringwood) makes.
I will say that I'd be fine recommending this leg of Rintot Two in general to someone with reasonable levels of fitness and confidence. Moreover the section between Highland Water Enclosure and Ringwood Ford Bottom was probably my favourite part of the route - great track and I felt it sublimely tranquil.
Regarding the rest after Linford to King's Garn, both Rintot One and Two have the A337 crossing which I didn't rate at all but I do suspect travelling from Ringwood is probably a little better for seeing where you'll need to end up.
As for the final divergence between Rintot One and Two - via Woodlands vs. via Rossiters Lane - I did mistakenly travel down Woodlands Road perhaps 200m further before backtracking and I didn't find it overly comfortable to follow on foot (it might well improve further along). Rossiters Lane was fine, though I might suggest diverting around the public footpath section in the winter to avoid the worst of the mud.
Final bit but important, just before getting into Totton the A-road roundabout doesn't have pedestrian lights so be prepared to wait a little for a gap in traffic to take advantage of.
Sorry I can't be of more help - I'll be interested to hear about the route you've chosen should you decide to give it a go! I do think there might be a best of both worlds to be had here.
Thanks,
Charles

13 Nov 2023Thanks Charles! We had a successful walk. About 1/3 lane walking, but it always felt safe enough to us, with space to see and both step off if a car was coming.
I decided to check out the A337 verge... it's not ideal or pleasant, but I did feel it was safe enough and not so far it should fail the route. It's just not a nice 3-4 minutes. A single gate would avoid the need for that..
We decided to go north of the A31 and through the Lakes. I'm glad we did as it was good walking.
As you say, I'm sure there's another route that could be better, but for people who don't mind some lanes and a verge... in my opinion... Rintot Three is an OK option and I'd be happy to walk it again.
Are you trying any others around there?

28 Mar 2024Hi Dan,
I see what you mean now re. taking Linford through King's Garden on your Rintot Three route. The same thought occurred to me when trundling alongside the A31. Pleased to see that it worked out!
I think your comments about the A337 verge and other points are fair. I've updated the review scoring now to balance the pros and cons and better reflect the whole. Individual needs notwithstanding I feel a lot might come down to personal preference - a more benign example being the amount of lane walking the Rintots have.
As for exploring others, I'm based in Salisbury so future endeavors will generally be on the southern half of that "web". I'm keen to try Tiswil One next, and do a bit of a recce around Salfor Two. Following that I might look to complete the "Sal" set, meanwhile making a start on the western half of the Fordingbridge web. No shortage of things to do!
