Description

This is a variation of RedPen two, taking a different route out of Redruth and then bypassing Lanner by using the Mineral Tramways Mining Trail. The new route out of Redruth is along roads with paths the whole way. While it is a bit dull, it avoids the section of the B3297 which is part of RedPen two which is quite difficult and potentially dangerous (fast, unpaved, difficult visibility, no verges). Once out of Redruth, the walk along the old Tramway is fantastic - with interesting history and great views, and definitely seems preferable to walking along the roads around Lanner.

After that, the route is exactly the same as RedPen two

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Great walk. Took around 4 hours (with a lot of stops to explore the surroundings) so perfect to spend an afternoon. Not too many hills, the terrain was a nice mix of footpaths, backroads and grassy fields. It was very peaceful and rural, saw more rabbits than people, and the people I did see were all friendly and approachable as is often the case in rural areas.

A few parts of the trail were quite overgrown, but not to the extent that it was difficult, just added to the adventure really. The views around Lanner were crazy, stretching for miles across Cornwall. As you descend into Redruth you see the sea of the North Coast in the distance which is also nice.

Ran into some cows but had no trouble with them. The route was surprisingly direct and accurate (this was my first time trying Slow Ways and I was shocked at how spot on it is). It was also very easy to get a bus back at the end, without having to even leave the route. Would definitely recommend, and may even walk it again myself once I've exhausted all of the other walks around me.

I walked this route on the 26 August 2023. It is overall a fantastic walk, with great views, and is generally easily to follow and navigate. The pub in Stithians is worth a visit, and is conveniently roughly half way. There were, however, some extremely overgrown sections around Tresevean - one of which involved walking along the edge of a field rather than trying to follow the actual path. This may be a summer problem. There are also some difficult styles and gates which require some agility to use. We didn't have any trouble with cattle on this walk.

Even with the overgrown paths, it is still a worthy Slow Way. The slight changes at the Redruth end make this even better in my opinion.
