Connect Penryn with Slow Ways
We’re creating a network of walking routes that connect all of Britain’s towns, cities and national parks
more walks and reviews are needed to fully connect Penryn to the verified network. Can you give a hike and help?
Give a hike!Help connect Penryn
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Penryn’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates
This is a fantastic route to do, as it's summer it was slightly overgrown and the field sections can get tricky working out how to stay on route....

An excellent walk made in mid August on a sunny day from Falmouth to Penryn via the Flushing Ferry (£4.25)....
Tim Ryan
The road here at the time I walked it was fairly busy (in mid-August} and there is no pavement....
Tim Ryan
The flattest of the 3 routes to the south of the Penryn river. Also the best views of the three over the estuary. A safe route easy to follow,...
Tim Ryan
A safe route, but of all the options (4) this one has the most climb as it goes up to the Beacon. All the roads are paved. Fairly direct....
Tim Ryan
The road section between the A39 and Carclew Road was fairly busy and with fast vehicles, albeit it is only a minor road. However I felt comfortable on this section and never felt in danger because of the wideness of the road, Also the trees were in full leaf and whilst it was a sunny day it was dark along here, vehicles travelling with lights on in the middle of the day....
Tim Ryan
Crossing the A39 was tricky but just required some patience for a good gap. The pub in Stithians made for a good break half way....
BDT
This is the most direct Slow Way between Falmouth and Penryn, but it has the steep Beacon Street / Old Hill sections, with a lot more side streets to negotiate and narrower pavements than Penfal4. Oh, and the views aren`t as good as Penfal4 in the parts that are different....
Paul Chilcott
A very good slow way, easier than the similar Penfal2, as it avoids the steep Beacon Street / Old Hill section and it has great views over the harbour and the Penryn / Fal estuary. I liked the elevated, wide pavements along North Parade and some other streets on this side of Falmouth (Photo 3)....
Paul Chilcott
These two towns are very different places, both of them working towns, but Penryn is a little removed from the tourist circuit. Photos 6, 7, 8 & 9 - Views of the Penryn / Fal estuary...

The major issue with this route came at the village of Helland Mill where the route indicates a right turn onto a track that follows the edge of the reservoir....

This is the second section of the fully waymarked "Trafalgar Way" a 361 mile journey from Falmouth to London, and I think this is an excellent route, with plenty to see, good access all round, and easy to follow and the GPX file was accurate. The route was safe (I was walking with my labrador, and although it is not "easy" it is perfectly doable by any able bodied person with some fitness. I would definitely walk it again....

This is the first section of the fully waymarked "Trafalgar Way" a 361 mile journey from Falmouth to London, and I think it is a perfect route, not dangerous in the slightest and flat all the way....

Great and easy way to get from Falmouth to Penryn. Lovely views and for most of it you are not on busy roads....
Tom Mainwaring-Evans
Love this walk, it is a bit uneven and goes through rough terrain, you couldn't do this in a wheel chair for example. Lovely walk though with great views and a mix of great scenery. You can get a ferry in to Falmouth or simply stop at Flushing....
Tom Mainwaring-Evans
A quick and easy way for all to get from Penryn to Falmouth, it doesn't take much longer if you walk the route adjacent to the estuary though and that has less traffic and has better views....

Louis Parkerson added Penfal four, a new walk from Penryn to Falmouth
Walk this routeNot too many hills, the terrain was a nice mix of footpaths, backroads and grassy fields. It was very peaceful and rural, saw more rabbits than people, and the people I did see were all friendly and approachable as is often the case in rural areas....
Jacob Wright
It is overall a fantastic walk, with great views, and is generally easily to follow and navigate....
panifex
Super easy and picturesque route between Penryn and Falmouth. Falmouth is such a great destination too....
Slow Ways Darren
Public transport options: I got to the start of the walk by train to Penryn station; you could then get the train back from Falmouth Town or Penmere stations. You can also reach Penryn and Falmouth by bus....
Georgie
The ferry from Falmouth is cheap and regular, but the last one is at 5 o’clock, so the alternative route along roads is definitely required....
panifex
Excellent short walk with beautiful scenery echoing much of what has been written in the previous two reviews. The only update is that as of May 2023 the fare for the Flushing Ferry is £4....

There are a few sections which are on roads, particularly leaving Calenick and walking along the bypass between Playing Place and Carnon Downs which are the reasons for three stars. There were opportunities to get food from the petrol station by Playing Place and you go past the Norway Inn pub in Perranarworthal. I would walk this route again....

Stithians and Lanner, which are passed through on the route also have shops and other useful facilities if required. After descending into Lanner, there is another fairly steep climb on quiet roads, before a more gentle finish heading into Redruth....
everydayduffy
A couple of road sections without footpaths and with potential for fast travelling traffic require caution and combined with the general reliance on roads over footpaths this is why I ultimately have given it three stars. But overall route choice makes sense balancing directness with everything else and the majority is pleasant and enjoyable walking....
JTinsley
Very enjoyable route taking in some picturesque and quite country lanes especially around Kennall Vale, and rewarding height gained with some impressive views, particularly of Carn Brea when coming in to Redruth....
JTinsley
Lovely short walk on the north side of the river Penryn to Flushing, where you can catch a ferry to Falmouth (£3.50 in May 2022). Plenty of public transport options back to the start point....
Charles Hedley
Overall a very pleasant, fairly easy walk on lanes, tracks and open fields. Train travel back to start point via Truro available....
Charles Hedley
At high tide these may not be passable but alternative route sections are available. The Flushing Ferry runs 7 days a week, hourly in the winter and every 30 minutes in the summer until 4pm winter/ 5pm summer....
bennsal
There is a pub in Perranarworthal, shop and pub in Perranwell, pub in Devoran and shop in Playing Place on the route, so plenty of options for refreshments....
