Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

20 Aug 2023I walked this on a sunny Saturday morning, from Redhill to Netherne. There had been some rain overnight.
From Redhill, the route quickly leaves town, to go around the Patteson Court Landfill. The path there was mostly good (photo #1), but at other parts ridiculously muddy (photo #2). There is a nettle strewn path next to the fence to the landfill that provides some relief. After crossing Cormongers Lane the route continues along some open land with a few sheep (photo #3). After passing a cricket pitch the route goes past a farm and threads between a few lakes and nature reserves (photo #4), and then it heads towards the M23/M25 junction with the noise of traffic increasing the closer you get. The lovely trees in the woodland dampen at least some of it (photo #5). Once crossed the M25 on a bridge, the route then heads through another woodland (photo #6) with lots of wild blackberries, up to Rockshaw Road slightly uphill. After crossing the M23 with an underpass, the route then climbs up steeply (photo #7) to the top of the North Downs (photo #8) where you just about can make out the tall buildings of London (photo #9). This walk does not follow much of that (photo #10), but instead tracks across a lane to cross Dean Lane. There is no pavement there, but there is a hole in the hedge (photo #11) with a public footpath on the other side. This connects to a path through Alderstead Heath (photo #12) and across a corn field (photo #13). And finally it finishes with a short section along a narrow lane (photo #14) to end up at Netherne and its church (photo #15).
It is not the most direct route, and at times muddy. It is quite natural, but it might make sense to have a more urban route through Mersham.

25 Mar 2023I did this walk in winter. There are certains parts of the route that get VERY muddy and VERY noisy (especially towards the M23/25 motorway junction and the trail running adjacent to the M25). The walk involves two motorway crossings and there's lots of uphill walking from Merstham to Netherne. It does skim along the edges of watery wonderlands like The Moors / Sypnes Mere and Mercers Lake and also does offer stunning views as the path converges with the North Downs Way. If you need to get back to Redhill from Netherton, walk down towards Brighton road, the bus goes from there.

25 May 2022This is a lovely walk with a lot of uphill sections from Merstham to Netherne. Netherne has very poor public transport links. There is a lovely cafe on the cricket pitch in Netherne but it is not open all the time. Redhill has all the amenities of a large town. Merstham (en route) has a train station, small supermarket, a pub and a petrol station. There are also bus links back to Redhill.
