Description
I have made an alternate route which avoids the housebuilding site. It also takes a clearer route between Drinkwater Park and Prestwich Clough, avoiding the narrow gateway. I’ve also used the east bank of the River Irwell which I think is a clearer path than the west one

01 Jul 2023I started from Prestwich by heading downhill along residential streets where it appears people don't walk because the pavement is a bit overgrown!, Into the woods, there are lots of side paths but I followed the main routes through. It was lovely to be in the woods but there was a drone of traffic beyond, but bird song too.
A short bit of road led to a cycle track through Drinkwater Park. Staying on the east side of the River Irwell, the path was generally a good cycle track, with some interesting information about the lowered section of the embankment regarding flood management. From what I could see, looking across the river, I think this side is better maintained and you avoid potential close giant hogweed plants, with which the Irwell seems completely infested.
There are a few busyish residential streets (to avoid the new housebuilding), but you get to pass the beautiful, but currently boarded up, Racecourse Hotel, and also the beautiful but run down former butchery department of the Pendleton Cooperative Industrial Society, on the roundabout.
After this the route followed the Irwell again (on both sides) before heading diagonally straight through the Salford University campus to Salford Crescent Station.
