Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

So, first things first. I didn’t manage to complete this route on the day. Due to detours to avoid impassible parts of the route, and poor planning on my part it just got too dark, so I wasn’t able to do the last one and half kilometres across fields.

However, I can’t recommend this route for the part I did do. The route runs out from Poulton-le-Fylde then alongside the Main Dyke. As Main Dyke opened up to go under the A585 there is a lot of construction work going on here, so I needed to take a detour around these by crossing the A585, walking along it for about a hundred yards then doubling back onto Old Mains lane and then heading down towards the River Wyre estuary.

Unfortunately, it was very wet here - the marshy water was coming over the top of my boots. I suspect in the summer this may be walkable, and the path would lead along the banks of the Wyre where you’d go up over the Shard Bridge at the other end. So I had to turn back and take a detour along the A585 and across the bridge.

Once across the bridge the route suggested was to go along a footpath under the north end of the bridge along the bank again. However, this was also un-walkable for me. It was muddy, and not very pleasant due to discharge from a number of pipes. I also couldn’t find out where to get off the riverside at the other end so, again, I had to retrace my steps back to the bridge and take another detour down Old Bridge Lane instead. From there the route traverses a number of fields, with access via stiles, some of which were in very bad state of repair. I actually couldn’t find the footpath off Sower Carr lane and had to take the final detour of the day back on to the main road and through into Stalmine. By this time it was pitch black so I decided to abort the walk. Luckily there are a number of bus stops along the main road so I only had to wait 10 minutes and caught a bus back into Poulton.

So, due to all the reasons above, I can’t recommend this route and I will be looking to suggest an alternative.
