Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

  1. Complete the survey training.

28 Jan 2024 Winter

January 2024. Direction: Risca to Pontllanfraith.

There were a couple of access problems along this route, as described below. I will plot a new route to get around them.

The first access problem was at Danygraig Nature Reserve. There is a style leaving the reserve leading on to the mountain area. The path is just about accessible for a while, but runs out into thick undergrowth, brambles and bracken. This is the same problem identified in the review of Caeris1 (Caerphilly to Risca). I also tried to walk this part of the route around a year and a half ago and nothing has changed since then. The alternative route continues up Danygraig Road.

The second access issue is after crossing the A467 at Cross Keys. After going up the steps just after the tunnel, the route joins a footpath to the right, which then appears to follow a right of way (as shown on the OS map) along or near the bottom of the mountain, but the path eventually runs out. The alternative route leads up to the forestry track, which then leads back on to the right of way at the bottom of the mountain before joining the Raven Way, which then goes up the mountain to Mynyddislwyn.
