Description
This is an alternative route for Pontyberem to Ammanford, avoiding the access issues flagged on Pontamm one. There are limited places to cross the A48 and this is the deciding factor in finding a safe route between Ammanford and Pontyberem - this takes you safely under it at Cefneithin.
The route goes through Mynydd Mawr country park at Tumble and Nant y Ci park near Ammanford, so the GPX is correct even where it's not following a marked footpath as there are public routes through both parks.
Overall, a mixture of road, footpath and track. If the weather has been wet, the footpath through Thornhill (between Gorslas and Capel Hendre) can be very muddy and it may be better just to follow the road. However, in half-decent weather this section of footpath makes a pleasant change from rather uninspiring road!

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

16 Mar 2024This is a perfectly walkable route, but there are some long-ish stretches of rather uninspiring pavement. The route is largely determined by the need to safely get over the dual carriageway of the A48.
From Pontyberem, drop onto the disused railway track and follow it all the way to Cwmmawr. It's a level path, a bit muddy in places, but a pleasant off-road walk. In the spring, there are abundant wildflowers, and it's a delightful cool, green tunnel in summer. At Cwmmawr, turn right for a short steep uphill before turning left and then following the paths through Mynydd Mawr. If you're not in a rush, there's a host of lovely paths to meander among and explore, or you can follow the direct track until you come out at the car park and turn right, heading through Cefneithin. Passing under the A48, I'm afraid you're then onto an easy, if a bit dull, plod along the pavement through Gorslas. If the weather has been ok, follow the GPX route and take a pleasant footpath through the ruinous farm at Thornhill. In the winter, out in bad weather, ignore this bit as it's very boggy! Instead of forking right where the map shows, just keep plodding along the road before turning right when you finally meet the road junction coming into Capel Hendre. Either way, you'll end up at the same point!
Passing through Capel Hendre (resisting the urge to stop at the pub!) follow a nice bridleway alongside the river and past the solar farm, and then, a short while later, trust the mapped route as it takes you down an unmarked lane between some houses - it will then deliver you into the Nant y Ci park and a pleasant meander down through the woods before following the last bit of road into Ammanford.
All in all, a fairly easy walk with no steep hills, but unlikely to be suitable for wheels. Gets a three star rating just because there's a fair bit of road walking, but there are some lovely bits of this route which are well worth a look.
Plenty of facilities in Ammanford, including bus and train stations and cafes, toilets, pubs etc. Pontyberem is on a bus route. It has a small supermarket, a chip shop (open evenings only) and a cafe which is, sadly, not dog friendly (so we had to sit in the rain and wait for our lift home!).
