11 May 2024I saved this route for good weather conditions (dry & clear vis) as I knew the area and really wanted to enjoy it - and I did!
I walked from Simonsbath to Parracombe, purely because with no public transport I have to rely on a lift to Simonsbath, but it's the easiest way in terms of climbing. I climbed 1300ft (so not easy) but descended over 1700. If you go the same way, just remember to keep looking behind you for the epic views.
From Simonsbath there is a climb through typical Exmoor woodland, before getting up to the open Moor. There is no shelter up here, so be prepared, but it's beautiful. There are panoramic views and only sheep and skylarks for company. In some places the path on the ground doesn't exactly match with where gps says the official path is, but I stuck to the obvious paths. Having said that, there are sections where there is no path at all and no signs, so you need a map, gps, a compass or bags of confidence!
Parts of the open moorland are obviously boggy in wet weather, you'd need good boots and plenty of energy to do this route in the winter.
There are standing stones, barrows and tumuli on the moor to look out for. From Woolhanger the route is less moor and more farmland, and I came across plenty of cows as well as sheep, all placid and kept well away from me and the dog.
I really enjoyed the walk through Parracombe, a picturesque village, and the route ends by the pub, which is also the bus stop. There aren't any facilities on the route, and not many at Simonsbath or Parracombe either, but this IS Exmoor.
100% recommend this route.

13 Nov 2023I've not completed the full route, but the section from Exhead to Simonsbath.
It can be easy to miss the path on the open moorland, as it's crisscrossed with faint farm vehicle tracks which can lead one astray. Having a compass to hand is helpful. That said, even a significant deviation from the route isn't going to cause big problems, as the field boundary edge isn't far away and works as a good handrail to get to the correct corner.
