06 Jan 2024Perfect walk for a wet winter as it is almost all on quiet country lanes.
I walked from North Tawton to Okehampton, and after walking downhill from the middle of the town got on to the Tarka Trail via a weird and narrow turnstile - who's idea was that?? -walking next to the River Taw. A lovely start.
The route then crosses a busy A road and heads along the B3215. This is still officially the Tarka Trail, but it was not a particularly pleasant section. The road isn't really busy, and there is a verge to walk along, but it would be much nicer with a path. It's short though, and then the route is all quiet country lanes to Okehampton, sometimes with great views, and very peaceful. You can often see the Tors of Dartmoor, and shortly before you begin the descent to Okehampton an enormous view north over what seems like all of Devon opens up. We stopped to look at it for some time.
The final stretch into Okehampton along the B3250 was no fun. The road is busy and noisy, but there is a path all the way, so it is perfectly safe. This section could be avoided by using the Tarka Trail, along the East Okement River in to town, which is longer, but probably nicer. However, the ground us absolutely sodden at the moment, so sticking to hard surfaces was perfect for us today!.

06 Jan 2024Enjoyable route for a winter's walk after a lot of rain. Plenty of quiet Lane walking with just a shortish walk across fields which could have been much much worse considering the amount of rain.
