Description

A very quiet rural route (except the path beside the M25 near Westerham) through the North Downs. It was designed to avoid the unsafe road walking on NewWes 1 but uses the same southern half as it's very good and had already been tested. The new northern half has a 500m there-and-back stub to The Bull at Chelsham Common (replacing The White Bear at Fickleshole) but otherwise NewWes 1 and NewWes 2 are almost the same length. If you visit in the sunnier months it's worth taking time to look around the rest of Hutchinson's Bank nature reserve in New Addington "London's Top Butterfly Hotspot", you may even see glow worms.

It is largely off-road across fields, along tracks and through small bits of woodland. The road walking outside the end towns is very limited and on quiet lanes except one short bit on Lusted Hall Lane when it comes into Tatsfield. Sometimes it's muddy, or the path is very steep and there are various grazing animals along the way - typical for the green-belt North Downs!

Places to stop and eat mid route at Tatsfield (tea room, pub and bistro) and Chelsham Common (pub). Various bus routes intersect or run close enough to the route to use as an escape point. Most cross the Surrey/London boundary - only Transport for London red buses offer Hopper Fares etc. See approximate positions on small map. A desktop search for mid-route budget accomodation found nothing, but the Days Inn motel at Clacket Lane Services is on the route just outside Westerham. There are rooms under £50 if you pick the right month and book far enough in advance. Glamping site at Beech Farm Road near Chelsham is also on the route, but prices start above £50, even for an unfurnished bell tent
