Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

08 Aug 2021Largely traffic-free and generally direct route between Newport & Ventnor. Much of it passes through attractive countryside, quickly picking up the Newport to Sandown Cycleway along the former railway alignment. The route deviates slightly to access the village of Godshill, but this can be avoided, if required, by continuing to follow bridleway GR46 south to the A3020. From Wroxall the route heads up and over Wroxall/Ventnor Downs which gives fantastic panoramic views. Note that the route descends more than 100 steep steps from Down Lane to reach Mitchell Avenue. Generally well-signposted. In terms of surfaces Newport to Godshill is almost all tarmac or gravel track. Godshill to Wroxall is mostly along tracks with some tarmac sections closer to the villages. It passes through the Freemantle Gate on the Appuldurcombe estate. Wroxall to Ventnor is along thinner footpaths, sometimes one person wide between hedgerows.
Between Wroxall and Ventnor, Rew Lane offers a flatter alternative direct route which does not require the descent of steps described above. It involves walking along a relatively quiet tarmac lane.

31 May 2021Steep steps descending from Ventnor down. Most of the Newport end of route is simple, flat and accessible.

31 May 2021Walk is very accessible - mostly on tarmac or gravel road between Newport and Merstone, on the old railway line. Amenities in Godshill. Steep steps on the down descending into Ventnor.
