Stuart Bain

15 Aug 2023 Summer

I had a free day on the family holiday to complete this route from Milford Haven to Newgale I parked in Milford Haven behind the Tesco. There is a bay of around 10-15 spaces that are free parking.

The route leaves Milford Haven via an off road cycle path running alongside Habberston Pill. Along the path, most of the fence posts have jam jar lids secured to them. Answers for their purpose on a postcard please!

As you exit the cycle path onto the road you come across Pill Priory. It's a 30 foot structural remains of a building in someone's front garden. The priory was built in the later 12th Century and was the daughter house of St Dogmaels Abbey in Cardigan. The priory was sold off in 1544 to private landowners following the 1536 dissolution.

Following this is quiet road walking along grass verges into Tiers Cross. There is a pub sign there, but I didn't spot whether it existed or whether it was even open was I continued along the route.

Tiers Cross to Broadway was again road walking on verges, but the road is used as a cut through to Broad Haven. So dependent on the time of year, this may get a little busier with cars passing every 30-45 seconds. Care is needed in this section until you arrive in Broadway.

At Broadway you head along the second off road right of way track. It appears to be an old farmers track, but is unclassified by OS (other than it being an access route). At this section those with wheels may need to be careful as there are ruts on the track and mud making it a little slippery. I enjoyed this section as the track was overgrown and sheltered from both sides.

You leave the path at Bromsgrove Farm and take a right up a gentle slope and then take a left onto a grass pathway as you pass a smallholding onto an off road right of way. Continue to the end where you pass through a well kept gate and follow the sign to Nolton.

Due to the lack of facilities mid way along this section, I decided to take a break shortly after for lunch and enjoy the peace and tranquillity. I realised that other than dog walkers at Habberston Pill and one pair of walkers along the route, I hadn't seen or spoken to anyone for more than 2.5 hours. I had however given a thumbs up or waving hand to all the courteous drivers who either slowed down or give me a wide berth on the roads.

The quiet road walking takes you via Nolton Cross. There are signs on the junction for a pub and farm shop, but again I can't verify if/when they are open. This road continues through the sleepy settlement of Nolton and into Nolton Haven. In Nolton Haven is a pub and on this day an ice cream van alongside the beach.

It's worth taking a break here with toilets nearby and the stunning beach to experience. From previous visits I knew the sting in the tail of this walk was the trek on the hill leaving Nolton Haven. And so it proved.... I plodded up the narrow and very steep road at a slow pace and was really glad to reach the summit!

Shortly after the summit the routes goes off road again onto a link right of way to the Welsh National Coast Path. For those with wheels this section should be avoided and to just continue on road into Newgale.

The coast path started with a bang with a very steep climb down and then a very steep climb up via steps. Take care in this section as there were signs up about other paths being closed due to land slips. The OS map does not accurately reflect what exists on the land.

At the bottom this valley is an old chimney stack in a really isolated place. This is the remnants of the Trefan/Trefane colliery. It was one of several coal mines in the St Brides bay area and production was ceased in 1906/7.

The coast path leads you to the road and you pass a few car parks with toilets until you reach the main road and your destination.

I walked this in the height of summer and tourist season. With the sun shining it made for a very peaceful walk avoiding the tourist hot spots (other than Newgale) and experiencing the secret Pembrokeshire. highly recommended.
