Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

21 Sep 2022Enjoyable easy to follow walking route with some great views from Gallows Hill. The route shown on Slow Ways is accurate. Includes an unavoidable mile long road section but there is a pavement and it does pass the New Inn pub (handy), alternative off road route isn't direct so the route on Slow Ways is best despite this.
There are a couple of stone step crossings over walls on this route (at Common Lane and Chevet Lane), as well as three stiles (two of which are for the railway crossing) and a small plank bridge across a stream but its sturdy (all pictured in the attached photos). The golf course crossing is straight across the green, no surfaced path but has markers to follow (pictured). There is a closed gate between the farm and Hare Park Lane at the Crofton end of the walk, it has a gap at the side to walk round but it isn't marked as a footpath so thought I'd mention because it is a public right of way so don't be put off of continuing. There also aren't any way markers when you pass through the farm but as long as you keep to the edge and don't wander into the yard you can't go wrong, there is sometimes a dog here but its on a chain. The footpath between Shay Lane and the farm can get overgrown but is passable, at the Shay Lane end you may hear dogs barking close by, they are enclosed (I think its a doggy daycare).
The field next to Common Lane in Walton sometimes has sheep or cows in, the gap in the wall at the top of the stone steps to get in and out of this field is quite narrow (pictured). The stile and plank bridge is at the other side of this field.
The footpath at the Newmillerdam end of the route has several exposed tree roots along it so do take care. The quiet lane between this footpath and Newmillerdam is quite steep.
There is a lovely cafe on the edge of the lake at Newmillerdam called the Boathouse, as well as many other pubs/cafes/restaurants in the immediate area.
I would recommend this route and have used it myself several times.

10 May 2021 (edited 27 Jun 2023)I live in Walton and use this route often to get to Newmillerdam or Crofton. It involves several stiles, steps (see example photo where the route crosses Chevet Lane), and a narrow footbridge so is only suitable for walking, and can be muddy. There is an unavoidable stretch of road walking through Walton but there is a pavement throughout this section.
