Description

This route is an improved version of Newcal4, which I tried to walk from Newport to Caldicot. Here are the changes:
1) From Pwll-Pen, it follows the lower footpath across a golf course and then the road to Llanwern. The hillside above Llanwern is now a construction site (new housing). The footpath over the hill from Pwll-Pen was fine for most of the way, but access to the road at Llanwern was blocked by fencing around the building site.
2) East of Bishton, it follows the road as the footpaths were completely overgrown and clearly haven't been used for a while. The road was very quiet - no problem to walk along it. NOTE: when the footpath leaves this same road (near Newhouse Farm) you need to climb over the gate into the field as the stile is so overgrown I couldn't even see it from the road. Once in the field, it's quite a good route towards Llandevenny.
3) SE of Undy at the end of the paved road, I couldn't find the diagonal footpath across the fields so stayed on the track.
4) If you don't need to go via Severn Tunnel Junction station & Rogiet, I recommend following the coast path signs along the quiet road across Rogiet Moor and crossing the railway line at Caldicot station. This is a quieter route which avoids the main road between Rogiet and Caldicot

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

  1. Complete the survey training.
