Description

This route is an improved version of Newcal4, which I tried to walk from Newport to Caldicot. Here are the changes:
1) From Pwll-Pen, it follows the lower footpath across a golf course and then the road to Llanwern. The hillside above Llanwern is now a construction site (new housing). The footpath over the hill from Pwll-Pen was fine for most of the way, but access to the road at Llanwern was blocked by fencing around the building site.
2) East of Bishton, it follows the road as the footpaths were completely overgrown and clearly haven't been used for a while. The road was very quiet - no problem to walk along it. NOTE: when the footpath leaves this same road (near Newhouse Farm) you need to climb over the gate into the field as the stile is so overgrown I couldn't even see it from the road. Once in the field, it's quite a good route towards Llandevenny.
3) SE of Undy at the end of the paved road, I couldn't find the diagonal footpath across the fields so stayed on the track.
4) If you don't need to go via Severn Tunnel Junction station & Rogiet, I recommend following the coast path signs along the quiet road across Rogiet Moor and crossing the railway line at Caldicot station. This is a quieter route which avoids the main road between Rogiet and Caldicot

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

20 Sep 2022 Summer

September 2022. Direction: Caldicot to Newport.

An excellent walk through the Gwent Levels. Varied terrain through lanes, tracks, fields, woods and suburbs. I expected this to flat and open countryside all the way, but the section from Bishton to Llanwern village did include some hills and woodlands - a lovely part of the walk.

This Slow Ways route has been through some evolutions, but this version is easy to navigate and most of the styles and paths were accessible. The only exception being at the end of the last field leading on to the lane into Bishton, which was completely overgrown, but at least there is a gate close by that can be climbed.

Photo 1 - A green lane leading into the fields section after Magor
Photo 2 - Wilcrick Hill (can also be seen from the M4 Magor junction)
Photo 3 - The lanes leading into Bishton
Photo 4 - Llanwern Steelworks.

No real comments to add from the last review although the long straight stretch south of Rogiet is very long and uninspiring!
Mostly all easy to follow and some nice views. No access problems from memory.
Magor has a co-op and heading out of Newport (I ran from Caldicot so it was on the way in) has a retail park with tesco etc for toilets and food.

This is a nice route apart from the urban stretch through Newport and the views of Llanwern Steelworks. Getting a bus from Friars Walk bus station to Ringland shortens the walk through Newport. Magor is good for a refreshment break.

    Hi MaddyT.
Thanks for uploading this new version Newcal 5 as an improvement over Newcal 4. Personally I would have kept the section past STJ and through Rogiet village. (I'm a resident of Rogiet, so I would say that, wouldn't I? Plus, a new cafe / shop is due to be built soon). Your route, using the WCP south of the railway and then up past Caldicot Station is fine too. By the way, the final half mile up Newport Road to Caldicot Cross is proposed to be made more cyclist / walker friendly soon. :-)
    Phil
