Description

I walked this route from Ashington yesterday (26.10.22). It is a more accessible route and could be accomplished by wheelchair users as it largely paved or Tarmac and follows the combined Cycleway alongside the Pegswood Straight and bypass before turning left down Whorral bank. This may be tricky in inclement weather as Whorral bank is steep - 6% reaching 10% decline over 0.5 miles - and runs right beside the road. While this a main road and sometimes very busy there are only two well laid out roundabout crossings to be accomplished before this point. The route then turns to Morpeth Bus Station (only 3 words here) and the town centre, which allows for an easy return to Ashington (15 mins) on the 35 bus. This route is fast allowing it to form a leg on a longer slowway to Longhorsley and Rothbury , which I will also post. This way can also be undertaken to complete a Morpeth -Ashington-Morpeth loop but there is a much more scenic alternative to both, alongside the Wansbeck River gorge from Bothal to mid-way on Whorral bank

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

  1. Complete the survey training.
