Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

06 Jan 2024A walk on an overcast January day but enjoyable nevertheless and could be enjoyed also as a circular route, walking back to Marske on the beach, tide permitting.
The route starts in the centre of Marske, near the roundabout and follows good footpaths through housing estates to the railway. From here the footpath gives way to a track next to the railway, used by cyclists too, and then through an extensive area of allotments. The track here was mainly hard surface and led to a road through housing, under the railway and a straight footpath to the railway station and the end of the walk. Using Strava it was nearly 2.5 miles. There are plenty of places for refreshments near the station or a short walk (or use of the furnicular) will take you down to the lovely beach and refreshments.

05 Jan 2024Another walk on a damp and grey day with my walking pal. An interesting walk starting in the main shopping square, around the back of Marske and some lovely houses along the way, to the outskirts of Marske. Here the route becomes a little less hard surfaced and more track-like, until Saltburn is reached, but easily navigated. You walk alongside the local train line, then through a huge allotment site. It was very quiet today - the beginning of January - but in the warmer months this will be a hive of activity. The route takes you under the train line and then finishes at the train station in Saltburn. We made it approx 2.5 miles using Strava. Once you’ve reached Saltburn there is so much to see and do here, the Victorian Cliff Lift is a must-try, fish & chips opposite the pier are some of the best you’ll find anywhere, and the beautiful row of colourful beach huts are a delight. One of our north-eastern gems without a doubt.

22 Aug 2023I regularly cycle this route, and it is generally popular with pedestrians too. There are a few steep bits, and one gravelly part by the fields that may make it a little trickier, but overall a good route and better then the roads.

26 Jun 2021This is an easy walking route, safe and suitable for most walkers with only a couple of short rougher areas easily passed. Good cheap accommodation in Saltburn at Saltburn House. The path through the allotments at the start (walking from Saltburn) is used by walkers and cyclists and is a designated bridleway. Dogs would have to be kept on leads. There are disabled toilets (keys needed) in Saltburn and Marske. The route would be possible for wheelchairs but quite tough going back to Saltburn from Marske as it is a slow climb most of the way. I have included photos of St Germains Church on the headland which would involve a slight detour turning right and following St Germains Lane rather than keeping on Windy Hill Lane. Captain Cooks family buried here and Charles Dickens visited the graveyard. Plenty of nice places to eat in both Saltburn and Marske. Looking back at the photos I have taken they don’t reflect the beauty of the walk as I have concentrated on the ease of navigation ! The allotments are a delight and views stunning.
