Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

10 May 2021 Spring

I've walked most of this route before and it's excellent. I walked the first 3 miles or so again today, to Charlton, so my detailed Slow Ways review really only applies to that first section.
Malmesbury has just about the perfect start to a Slow Ways walk, from the Town Hall which has public toilets and a great little coffee shop, and where all the local buses start and stop. But avoid the Town Hall car park, which is pricey, only allows parking up to 2 hours, and has very efficient parking wardens. You need to park at the long-stay 'Railway Station Car Park' and walk back up, past The Abbey, to the Town Hall.
This walk starts off on a NCR and follows mainly C roads, so is great if you have wheels. But is also out in the countryside for the majority of the walk; I saw plenty of flora and fauna this morning, with kestrels above me and hares crossing my path. The first 'off-road' section down a bridlepath to Garsdon Mill would have been fine if it hadn't rained over the last 2 days. But I easily back-tracked and detoured round it on the roads. Will get back later to do the entire route, but would certainly recommend it. Can't give it 5 stars yet, because I cannot recall whether it is totally suitable for wheelchairs / pushchairs all the way to Cricklade.
But just to add to the 'review methodology' criteria, there are public houses at Charlton and Minety if you need to take a break on the way.
