Help connect Malmesbury
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Malmesbury’s Slow Ways.

I had no issues really, acknowledged there are 14 stiles, 6 ped gates, 6 field gates, 4 stone stiles, and one set of seven steps....

Having read the reviews of the three routes, I undertook it yesterday walking from Tetbury to Malmesbury....

If the section ( and stile ) from Daniels Well is avoided, and the route as Shemal one to Malmesbury is completed, it could be a route suitable for wheelchairs / pushchairs etc...
Brian
What I encountered was field after field of grass over 2' long ( which even though I am very tall I had to wade through ) barbed wire fences, hedges, and 23 stiles, which varied from poorly maintained, overgrown, to some which were nowhere near where they are shown on the OS and definitive map. It is entirely possible that in about the multiple fields of long grass will be harvested which will then make the walking much easier....
Brian
The whole area around Lawn Farm is confusing, and badly needs proper waymarking ( fp's are not as the definitive map ) I found the road from Rodbourne to S Benger busy, but as the road is relatively straight its not unsafe....
Brian
Difficult access and route finding with not much to recommend that section. The B&B said they had walked the section from Malmesbury to Brinkworth and enjoyed it, hence 3 stars....

Also, slight alternatives, and a circular route to / from Malmesbury, can be found by going to the (excellent) 'White Walls Way' website at https://whitewallsway.weebly.com. If you do choose to start in Malmesbury, and are going by car, the Long Stay car park (old station car park) is at the bottom of the hill, below the Abbey, and next to a large Co-op....

Out of the car park, left at the Co-op and over the bridge, first right down Park Road, then keep right down Park Road parallel to the river. Then after that I have to admit I wasn't enamoured with the route though Estcourt Park. There's nowhere right on route to stop for lunch, but that's not really necessary; however, if you wanted you could always do a mini-detour to the pub in Brokenborough....

Walk this routeNote that this is not a farm any more, but a brand new big house (see photo; the bridleway is out of shot to the left where the fingerpost is.) If it's wet, the first section of this bridleway gets very boggy, so best avoid it by continuing along the road (Sutton Lane) to Sutton Benger....

That stile and right fork is the route you need to take, to get to Sutton Lane Meadows and then to the eastern end of Sutton Benger to regain the road to Malmesbury....
Stephenwalking
Malmesbury has just about the perfect start to a Slow Ways walk, from the Town Hall which has public toilets and a great little coffee shop, and where all the local buses start and stop. You need to park at the long-stay 'Railway Station Car Park' and walk back up, past The Abbey, to the Town Hall....

I found it impossible to get onto Chimal One by the right turn onto the footpath at Lipgate Farm because the gate was tied shut. However, there was an easy workaround by continuing to walk along Day's Lane, and turning right onto the Byway after about 200 yards, then left onto the Chimal One footpath. (This left turn was not marked by a visible fingerpost or way marker). It took me left to Day's Lane then stopped, leaving me to walk along Day's Lane and onto the grass verge alongside the A350. Then around the M4 roundabout to the relative safety of the grass verge alongside the A429 and the right turn to Clanville. The left turn onto the footpath was not marked, but relatively easy to spot, before the white house (see photo). For those who reach Corston and want to save a bit of time, note that there is a safe and usable pavement / footpath / pavement all the way from Corston to Malmesbury alongside the A429....
