Help connect Cricklade

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Cricklade’s Slow Ways.

The start of the route was easy to find in Cricklade and the first 1.4km were very pleasant along a disused railway. Unfortunately, the second half of this section has been fenced off as new tracks are being laid to extend the Swindon and Cricklade railway (a permissive path alongside is promised). I ended up on a tarmac path for the last bit through the Country Park before we went under the Cricklade and Swindon railway bridge and found ourselves briefly in Swindon suburbia. The route then followed another section of disused railway for quite a long stretch and again was also the 45 National Cycle Route. We emerged to the west of the mainline station at Swindon and headed through the shopping area to find the Library and Information Centre. It may be worth checking if there is a permissive path along the Cricklade and Swindon railway sections that have already been laid....

Malmesbury has just about the perfect start to a Slow Ways walk, from the Town Hall which has public toilets and a great little coffee shop, and where all the local buses start and stop. You need to park at the long-stay 'Railway Station Car Park' and walk back up, past The Abbey, to the Town Hall....
