Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

This is a beautiful walk with plenty of interest along the way.

Approx 60% of the route involves walking on B class roads which might not be enjoyable for everyone.

The other 40% is over the Hill of Barra way marked trail.

The scenery in this area is incredible.

Some thoughts and timings from this morning:

9:15
Left Inverurie Train Station on a Monday, initially walking on pavements.

Turned off past the Keith hall gatehouse and followed the road which gradually slopes uphill.

At this stage the road is wide enough for cars going both ways.

Cars coming past reasonably frequently but there is enough grass on the verge to move out of the way.

Drivers are used to pedestrians on this road and seem to be respectful.

30 mins
Roads are narrower now (mostly single track), and cars are going slower than before with less frequency.

First views over to hill of Barra from the crest of the road.

Road now sloping gently downhill.

50 mins
Arrive at turn off for Kirkton of Bourtie.

Roads only seem to have farm traffic on them now.

The way ahead over the hill of Barra can be identified from the junction.

1 hour
Kirkton of Bourtie Stone circle is in a field on the left, and is worth a visit.

1 hour 10
Keep an eye out for the Barra Hill Community Path information sign.

Take the foot path up the side of the sign, and past the house.

The local community have gone to a lot of effort to establish this way marked trail over the hill (With support from the local farmers.)

Please read and comply with the warning signs that have been posted at each end.

Initially set off uphill through a narrow section of woodland.

The path then skirts a couple of fields with well constructed stiles at each fence.

Another short woodland section before reaching an open pasture field.

Pathless through the field, but aim for the stile on the other side by the water tank

1 hour 30
On top of hill of Barra. Fantastic views in all directions.

The remains of the ancient hill fort can still be identified.

The way ahead to Oldmeldrum is clear from this elevated position.

Set off again, aiming down hill for the stiles (recognisable from the distance by looking for the blue insulation on the top of the electric fences.)

Cattle in the adjacent fields, farmer has requested that gates are not disturbed, follow the waymarked trail only.

1 hour 45
Last section of woodland before reaching the initial roads and pavements in Oldmeldrum

2 hours
Arrived at Meldrum town hall.

This was a really nice walk at an enjoyable pace taking photos and enjoying the views along the way.

1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours would probably be appropriate for most walkers.
