Description
This route passes through extremely remote countryside, climbs 3 passes up to a maximum of 560m, and crosses a lot of rivers and streams. There are bridges for the main river crossings, but these may not be in the best condition. This route should not be attempted during periods of high rainfall. Users should be self supporting, as there are a number of bothies en route, but no shops or hostels.
This route follows the Cape Wrath Trail, information available on the Walkhighlands website (Glenfinnan to A Chuil bothy, and A Chuil to Inverie).
My photos show the (suspension) bridge at Carnoch (apparently this was rebuilt in 2019) and a deteriorating bridge in Glen Dessary. Note that according to the Walkhighlands walk description, the footbridge shown on maps part way down the Gleann a'Chaorainn, on the descent to Glen Pean, north of Streap, does not exist

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

24 May 2024I did this walk from Glenfinnan to Inverie as part of a longer multi-day walk.
As the description mentioned, this route follows the Cape Wrath Trail, taking the variant into Knoydart. Given how long this route is, it could be split it over an enjoyable 2-3 days, either wild camping or staying at bothies. I stayed at A'Chuil bothy and Sourlies bothy before making it to Inverie.
The trail to A'Chuil bothy is a mix of easy track, bog, and marsh. From Glenfinnan you will pass the impressive viaduct, which will have a large number of visitors and offers toilets, a cafe, and a shop. The track is fairly easy as you pass Coryhully bothy until you reach the top of the pass. As you descend, the path gets a little boggier and there will be times it becomes pathless. Stay to the west of the river and you'll come to a crossing towards Strathan. It will become possibly pathless as you approach the house. The path is very wet as you climb up to a forest dirt track. Just before the end of the forest, you might spot a cairn that directs you to a footpath down to A'Chuil bothy. You can follow this path up the next day to get back onto the track.
The next stop could either be Sourlies bothy or Inverie. After A'Chuil bothy, the trail is fairly boggy and rough, so great care is needed, especially if you've had wet weather. But the scenery is stunning, which makes this route 5 stars. Because we decided to split this into shorter sections and had fairly good weather, we were able to enjoy a couple of breaks by the lochs.
After Sourlies bothy, you can walk across the headland at low tide towards Cornach. The bridge has been repaired and now is very stable. You'll then turn off the track and make the climb towards Inverie. This is much easier than the path before Sourlies, and as you descend the pass you'll be treated to great views of the peninsula and the track gets better.
As you enter Inverie the scenery gets more lush. You will join the road into the centre, but it's a very quiet area so you won't come across many vehicles.
Inverie has a small shop with amenities and a community pub, the Old Forge, which was recently renovated. It's a great space with a pool table and darts board. The Tea Room has some great cakes and breakfast as well!
Generally, a pretty epic route in stunning landscape!.
