Strider
07 Jan 2024I walked from Epping to Hoddesdon.
Given the recent torrential rain and the floods around the country, this walk was wet but not bad, but boots needed.
From Epping station there's a path around the car park to suburban streets then onto the common. Then after a short road walk there's a path alongside the motorway and down alongside fields with narrow footbridge and stiles. Through an open field with cattle and then onto a farm track. Most of this walk consists of alternating paths and tracks across undulating hills. The highest point at Harold's Park Farm has great views, but there are many along this route. Walking out of Nazing there's a path across a field with new fences, each stile seems higher than the previous one. The wood close to a nursery was flooded but only 6cm at the deepest and the footing was good. There are some narrow creaky footbridges on this route. Around the nurseries the land is littered and some churned up by tractors, the greenhouses are ugly. There are earthworks blocking the official RoW. A small path behind some containers leads once again to a mix of roads, farm paths and tracks to the Lea Valley wetlands with good paths and tow paths. Most roads on this walk are very quiet. Lots of steps over the railway line. Across the New River into Hoddesdon outskirts and onto the high street with lots of shops, cafes, pubs etc.
This is a very varied walk, great hill top views on good farm tracks, to wet wooded valley bottoms. Beautiful natural landscapes and some ugly agri-industrial areas. That, I think, is the charm of this walk.
Some steep parts, rough ground, mud and puddles, dozens of stiles, gates and narrow footbridges.
Broxbourne is the nearest station to Hoddesdon 2.3 Km away from the town centre along the New River path that this route crosses.
