Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Heckfield to Wokingham 1 (Hecwok 1) review.

A fairly grim Slow Way between Heckfield and Wokingham. The Bramshill Road includes a stretch too dangerous for me to verify. There is a pleasant middle section, but then it’s three miles, probably unavoidable, alongside main roads into Wokingham.

The route out of Heckfield is alongside B-roads with narrow verges (Photo 1). This is particularly hazardous near the junction with the Bramshill Road [SU732608]. It would be better to use the footpath between Heckfield and the junction.

The two miles of Bramshill Road has fast moving vehicles; many of them large. There is not much room for vehicles to pass each other, and the verge is narrow and muddy (Photo 2). It is a pity the road is so bad, as it passes the attractive Bramshill Plantation (Photo 3).

I had hoped to verify the route with a warning for constant vigilance. However, a stretch just after the River Whitewater bridge [around SU739611] has the road narrowing around a bend, with barely any verge. Shattered registration plates and other detritus told me this was no place for a pedestrian!

I was relieved to leave the main road for quieter lanes. There’s a break point at Eversley, just over the River Blackwater (Photo 4) at The Tally Ho pub.

A footpath leads northeast through farmland (gate installed by the Loddon Valley Ramblers) to end in Finchamstead and The Queen’s Oak (Photos 5 & 6).

From there it is a three mile walk into Wokingham (Photo 7). Simply follow the main road all the way to the train station.

There is some promising news. I was looking for an alternative route from Hecksfield that avoids the dangerous road, perhaps via Bramshill Plantation. It turns out this has been plotted as part of Hecyat 1 (Heckfield to Yateley 1). It joins the existing Heckfield to Wokingham route at Eversley.
