Help connect Heckfield
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Heckfield’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates
An excellent walk through a conifer plantation, followed by a stretch of the Blackwater Valley Path. The walk between Heckfield and the entrance to Bramshill Plantation includes the Bramshill Road....

When the route passes farmland and turns towards Bramshill Plantation at about 3km from Heckfield it is easy to miss another turn to the right where a turnstile is hidden behind a tree and the waymark is small. Before the route actually enters the Bramshill Plantation, it is necessary to cross a horse enclosure. Paths through the Bramshill Plantation were not quite accurately reflected on my GPX viewer but the error was usually less than 30 to 40m so using common sense guided me well in the end....

Walk this routeSpencers Wood to Heckfield 2 (Spehec 2) review. A walk south from Spencers Wood, first alongside a main road, but then a quiet lane and path between a country park and water meadow. The Slow Way continues south on a path between Wellington Country Park (hidden from view) and the Wellesley Water Meadow (Photo 5)....

Walk this routeAn enjoyable route that visits wildflower fields, the River Loddon, and the Brenda Parker Way. The Slow Way continues though fields (Photo 3) to a rough track which follows the River Loddon....
Martin Ellis
The route out of Heckfield necessitates a short stretch of the Bramshill Road. The route escapes the road northwards, along a lane past the Wellesley Water Meadow (Photo 1). The final stretch to Wokingham train station makes good use of a park to avoid the main road....

When the route reaches the end of a forest, it is again easy to follow and nice to walk along even though there were muddy spots at times. The route passes by a dilapidated stately home with an inscription "Felis demuncta mitis" (a stroked cat is gentle) in case we didn't know. When the route exits the garden centre and crosses the road, the turning is a bit concealed and earlier than the route on the map indicates....

This would be a very nice route to walk if a critical stile close to the Loddon river was not under water. The most problematic stretch is when the route crosses the river Loddon over a bridge behind the Lillymill Farm. I tried to walk round it by getting close to the river Loddon and that led me to Potters Lane from the other side of the river. The only public route there is via the stile which was under water when I walked there....

Walk this routeThe route starts with a straight path through a meadow to reach crossroads where walkers need to take Bramshill Road. There is mostly no greater town on the route with the exception of Arborfield Cross where there is a shop and an inn. The rest of the route from Arborfield Cross takes another wide footpath down to a ford and up to Barkham...

Walk this routeThe Bramshill Road includes a stretch too dangerous for me to verify. The route out of Heckfield is alongside B-roads with narrow verges (Photo 1). It is a pity the road is so bad, as it passes the attractive Bramshill Plantation (Photo 3). I was looking for an alternative route from Hecksfield that avoids the dangerous road, perhaps via Bramshill Plantation....

Spencers Wood to Heckfield 1 (Spehec 1) review. A walk south from Spencers Wood, first alongside a main road, but then a quiet lane and path between a country park and water meadow. The Slow Way continues south on a path between Wellington Country Park (hidden from view) and the Wellesley Water Meadow (Photo 5). A short distance back along the B-road is a rusty gate to the footpath into Heckfield (Photo 8)....

Walk this routeThis was a little less dangerous, but I had to stand on the verge very frequently to allow traffic to pass (see photo 2)....

However, as at March 2022, there is no public transport available from Heckfield and only limited facilities there....

Walk this routeThis is a lovely route to walk that goes through beautiful villages, woods and fields. I'd 100% walk it again!...

I really enjoyed walking/running this Slow Ways route....
danravenellison
Pleasant, flattish, easy and varied walk, but extremely muddy in places when walked after heavy rain in February. The footpath is signed through the 'Hortus Loci' garden centre in Hound Green but you have to look for some of the signs. A little further on (when walking from Hook to Heckfield) when going past Turnpike Copse, the well marked footpath takes a slightly different route than that on the map, but ends up in the same place on Laundry Lane....
