03 Feb 2024 (edited 04 Feb 2024)We set off mid morning from Coggeshall, so it was a perfect opportunity to stop in Greenstead Green at the Hyacinth Cafe for lunch.
This was a fun walk with varied scenery and paths. After following Ambridge Road North out of Coggeshall you gradually climb the valley up to a highpoint on the fields. From here you enter the woods surrounding Markshall Arboretum. The first byway through Burgate's wood is unfortunately treated like an off-road adventure park during Winter, so you need to pick your way between puddles. But the next byway through Nunty's wood is a perfect walking surface.
There is a short section of road along quiet lanes and through the hamlet of Burton's Green. The footpath from here heads North, it's all field edges and narrow paths. Perfectly passable in Winter, but some sections are muddy and sloping, so you would be unable to progress with a wheelchair or scooter. There is an alternative byway from the corner by Villa Farm but it brings you out on a 60mph road with more traffic and no pavements.
When we reached Greenstead Green, the road section is all 30mph and has good viability for walking. For some reason the village has no pavements at all, but it feels safe to walk. This is where you pass the very nice Hyacinth Cafe and village store. The final stretch into Halstead was very pleasant, and follows a wide farm track up to about 72m with nice views across the fields. Halstead is an old town, with interesting paths between gardens from the fields all the way to the centre. A very enjoyable walk.
