Description
GilSit 1 is a great walk but spoilt by crossing private land at a Golf Course, walking on a un-pavemented part of busy Lower Rainham Road and about 25min walking along the A2 in Sittingbourne at the end. This route fixes those problems and a couple of minor ones too

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

27 Nov 2023I ran this route from Sittingbourne to Gillingham on a cold day in November. Heading out of Sittingbourne it wasn't long before I was in the countryside running past orchards and through fields. I hardly saw anyone during this part of the route, except for a dog walker on the diagonal path mentioned by the other reviewer - no dog poo though until at the very end going through back streets in Gillingham.
Some small hills opening out to lovely views and a short wooded section.
Then a few kilometres along the Medway estuary with lovely views out over the marshes. This part is on the England Coast Trail. A lot more people especially dog walkers on this part of the route. An optional detour along a causeway to "Horrid Hill" where I saw several people walking, but opted not to walk out to the small mound myself. After leaving the cost path, through streets and a park in Gillingham to the station.
There is quite a lot of tarmac on this route but I was glad I had worn trail shoes as it was a little muddy in parts. In summer I think road shoes would be fine.
There are a lot of those slanted cycle gates along the estuary - accessibility-wise these would be a nightmare for anyone with a wheelchair, double buggy, trike or even a bike with wide handlebars.

30 Sep 2023A great walk. Started at Sittingbourne. It leaves Sittingbourne through quiet residential streets and Albany Park and is quickly out into the countryside. The first half is through farmland over very gentle hills and the second half is along the Medway estuary, lovely views over the water, marshes, mudflats.
Break points at Borden (pub), Newington (shop, pub, station, buses), Rainham (pub, bit of a walk to buses, station, small high street), Riverside Country Park (TQ808683 - cafe, toilets), Strand leisure area (cafe, toilets).
There were steps, stiles, gates and just after Newington a path diagonally across a field which had not been "reinstated" but the line was marked by dog-s**t, watch your feet once the crop has grown. There is little road walking without pavements.
