Help connect Sittingbourne

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Sittingbourne’s Slow Ways.

I hardly saw anyone during this part of the route, except for a dog walker on the diagonal path mentioned by the other reviewer - no dog poo though until at the very end going through back streets in Gillingham. After leaving the cost path, through streets and a park in Gillingham to the station....

It's about 20-30 min walking along a busy road. Lower Rainham Road - the part north of residential Rainham - it's busy, with high hedges, no verge and no pavement....

The views of the Swale from Kingsferry Bridge was my high point, tide timing meant nice views of salt and fresh water marsh, mudflats and water and a good chance to see wading birds fairly close. Between Queenborough and the Kingsferry Bridge I was actually trying to walk SitQue 1 but couldn't as it was just too waterlogged!...

Pleasant rural route on footpaths and small country lanes outside the end towns. I tried out the section near Faversham along the A2 which an earlier reviewer had said was unpleasant, and they were quite right, SitFav 1 would be a horrible route to walk. I saw the earlier reviews but it'd been relatively dry so wearing trail shoes was perfect, although I could see dry signs of winter muddy sections. I'm giving it 5 stars for the blossom and bluebells, the A2 section is fairly short compared to the length of the route and there is (now) a better alternative given....

This route wasn't walkable in late March 2023 because it was too wet to cross Neatscourt Marshes - the fields between Rushenden and the Kingsferry Bridge. The alternative is a mostly pavemented (and probably quite boring and noisy) road walking route via Queenborough Rd then Sheppey Way. I checked that wet and unpassable bit of the route from the Swale end, and found the public footpath had been fenced across where the GPS said the path was, maybe the other reviewer climbed over the blocked up but climbable gate to the west, or followed the access track to the east. Just after Kingsferry Bridge I didn't bother scrambling down the steep bank to follow the line of the route but just followed the road to the roundabout. The route follows the official public footpath but that is very blocked by a deep band of scrub and in front of that is an ankle-unfriendly area crowded with big anthills and rabbit holes and a healthy coverage of thick vegetation....

The only place I'd change it is as you approach Ospringe where this route puts you on the unpleasant A2 (London Road). Instead you could keep on the footpath to Ospringe, crossing the A2 at Water Lane....

A mind numbingly dull route, made more mentally taxing by the traffic. Undoubtedly the fastest route, but is no better than catching a bus....

A better route would be to follow the railway line for the most part - Tonge Road, Lomas Road, Teynham Station, Deerton Street, Davington, Faversham Station. No pavement for most of it but a nice quiet road through fields and woodland....
