18 Aug 2024 Summer

Walked from Sawston to Foxton. The route leaves Sawston on a very good, wide, shared use path signed for pedestrians, cyclists and horses. This is the only noticeable incline throughout the walk. The footpath just after crossing the busy A1301 road is rather hard to find in summer when the hedgerow is in full leaf, and the path through the field was completely obscured by crop. This was the hardest part to navigate but likely not as bad at other times of year. The field could be avoided by carrying on north along the A1301 on the cycle path and turning left into the next track instead which is where the footpath joins up anyway. The rest of the route was very clear and consisted of a mixture of bridleways and footpaths with some small sections of road walking on quiet country lanes. I would say the majority of the route is more suited to walking than wheeling as the ground in places was a bit much for all but the most rugged of off-road bikes. There are also a couple of narrow bridges, although no stiles or gates.

Pleasant route going through varied environments, e.g. villages, cropland, bridleways used by horse-riders, and muddy paths nearby streams. It has been very dry of late so not much in the way of mud. Some of the pavement in the village of Foxton has been relaid recently which is nice. A few obstacles to note: a few narrow bridges over streams, one I measured at only 58 cm wide. Also some steps, and a few mins along a minor 40 mph road which had no pavement. For wheelers - bridleway has deep ruts in parts, the long grass paths through farms will be problematic, and gravel tracks too. If it has been raining, I expect muddy bits near the streams. Amenities at either end of the route, particularly in the larger village of Sawston, and the Queens Head Pub halfway (though the junction has no obvious crossing). Approaching Sawston I didn't realise I had to come out of the farm and onto the Cambridge Road, so I continued along the farm track and had to climb over a low gates to get to the main road. A motorway pass requires an incline and decline to reach the bridge but no steps, whilst a railway crossing at which you walk through gates according to a traffic light is perhaps problematic for less confident or slower users. Overall, 4X seems an accurate grade, and it's a very pleasant route (with one or two repetitive stretches), one I'd do again!.

A nice route using footpaths, dirt tracks, country roads, and the pavements of roads in Sawston, Newton, and Foxton. Occasionally muddy in parts, especially in winter or after recent rain.
