Description

Leave Ottery St Mary via the west; join the river path and cross to the western side. Continue on the river path south; turn right off the river path/old railway line before reaching Tipton St John, through the gate past the water treatment plant to Fluxton. Turn right on the road towards Fluxton, then left up the green lane in the middle of the hamlet. Follow the green lane over the hill until it becomes a tarmac road, and continue straight on up the hill ignoring left and right turns and crossing over Upper Broad Oak Road. Continue straight on until the B3180 junction and CROSS WITH CARE. Continue on the lane for nearly 2 miles until the footpath sign on the right after Rill Farm. Follow this footpath across fields and stiles until it rejoins a narrow lane; carry on the lane in the same line of travel and continue with the road as it bends left then right and crosses the A30. Continue following this lane, following the sign to Clyst Honiton at the junction (ignoring the right turn to Rockbeare) until the outskirts of the airport are reached. Continue on, and at the T-junction just after the airport entrance (BUS STOP), cross the main road at the lights to enter the airport long-term carpark. Turn right and walk through the carpark (it is marked as cycle/pedestrian route, runs parallel to the A30) right to its very end where it joins the roundabout. Travel anticlockwise around the roundabout, crossing the roads, and follow the pedestran/cycle route through Clyst Honiton until reaching the main road at the pub. Cross carefully (there are lights) and turn left to walk along the pavement of the main road to cross the River Clyst (BUS STOP). Turn right soon after up Blackhorse Hill (marked as Dead End except Cycles). Follow the lane directly up the hill and continue in the same direction along a lane that becomes increasingly narrow, ignoring turnings, and crossing minor roads to reach the Redhayes cycle/pedestrian bridge over the M5. Continue in the same direction along cycle/pedestrian path, crossing Cumberland Way at the lights and carrying on up Hollow Lane to pass the Ellen Tinkham School. At the next main road, turn left, cross at the lights and continue leftwards on the pavement towards a small roundabout. Just before the roundabout, take the road on the right, then take the small pedestrian path between houses on the left (3rd turning) which crosses the railway line on a pedestrian bridge. Continue in the same direction (CONVENIENCE SHOP), bending slightly left with the road until a minor Y-junction - take the right turn (signposted NO ENTRY to vehicles). Continue along this lane past houses until a public footpath sign points down a long flight of steps to the right. Take these steps, past the allotments and coss the road to continue in the same direction along the pavement. On reaching the small roundabout, cross over and bear slightly left down a LTN road, through the cycle barrier, then left turn to the Heavitree Pleasure Ground. Once in the park, turn right slightly uphill and continue this path out of the pleasure ground and straight on. Pass a primary school and health centre, cross the road as it bends left and continue up the small lane ahead of you, turning right at the top to follow this small residential road as it bends left through an area of fancy housing to reach Polsloe Road opposite the back of Heavitree hospital. Cross the road to the hospital side then turn right to follow the pavement in a northerly direction along Polsloe Road (CONVENIENCE SHOP). At the first junction, turn left to pass the main entrance of the hospital, then turn right down a pedestrianised street of pretty colourful houses BEFORE reaching the entrance to WAITROSE (which is on the left, BUS STOPS). Walk down this pretty street to the bottom, turn left and continue in the same line of travel to cross the carpark and reach the main Heavitree Road (BUS STOPS). Cross at the lights and walk along Denmark Road to the junction with Barnfield Road - turn right here and walk uphill to the pedestrian crossing of Western Way. Cross, continue onto Southernhay and after the grassy middle section, turn left to walk along Southernhay for a short way until you reach a right turning to Cathedral Close. Walk under the attractive bridge on the old city walls, through the gate and straight on past the cathedral. Continue down the narrow lane and when you finally emerge onto the High Street, cross over and continue in the same direction (keep Marks and Spencers on the left, and Sports Direct on the right) until Exeter Central Station is reached on the left side

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.
