Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

06 Jun 2023I walked this route from Esh Winning. It begins with a gentle descent NE along the Deerness trail - a former railway. Soon it crosses the river over a footbridge and climbs a steep stony path through the woods. Once it reaches open country it is slightly downhill on a good path as far as Rag Path wood. Here, there is a sharp turn to follow another narrower uphill path southwestwards. After 500m it becomes a stony farm track steadily climbing to Hill House. Straight ahead through the buildings to pick up a grassy track which continues to ascend steadily, until it eventually descends to the road at New Brancepeth. After crossing the minor road it continues around the farm buildings and picks up the line of a well cleared crossfield path to the outskirts of Brandon (a pub here). The route then descends through the residential roads and green spaces to reach the parade of shops, library and bus stop in the centre. An enjoyable country walk, although the west end is not suitable for all (steep and stony), with woods and farmland.
