Description

This route climbs over the Greensand Ridge with some great views south and west towards Tonbridge plus a viewing point over Chartwell, Churchill's former country home. There is a lot of woodland walking, particularly the northern half, and very little road walking, bar a few quiet lanes. It was designed to replace EdeWes 1 which has some problematic road walking.

There are waymarkers for some formal routes that I found helpful. Firstly the Vanguard Way, the Octavia Hill Centenary Walk West (NT - National Trust), the Mariners Hill Loop (NT). The latter overlaps with the Octavia HCWW but had slightly more consistent markings there. There are also briefer overlaps with *many* local walks near Westerham, the meandering NT Chartwell link from Westerham and the Greensand Way, but these are shorter and could lead you astray.

Rest and transport points include The English Oak pub in Crockham Hill and the cafe at Chartwell, open to non-visitors but limited hours. The 236 and 646 Kent buses (Southdown) both go through Crockham Hill. The 246 (Transport for London) bus to Westerham extends to Chartwell in peak summer visiting weeks/times

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

A lovely woodland walk with a chance to stop at Chartwell and amazing views from just above Westerham but particularly from the winding ridge between Chartwell and Crockham Hill. There was very little road walking except along small lanes which had little or no traffic. In Crockham Hill you cross a busy road but on the plus side The English Oak pub serves local beer and the pea and ham soup was fabulous. East of Edenbridge there was a short bit of roadwalking along Hilders Lane and then a very short bit on the slightly busier again Little Browns Lane before the turn off for the golf course. The golf course clubhouse was boarded up, and only some of the fairways had been very loosely mown recently and the effect was rather romantic, but bramble-y in places. On the other hand that will mean large hauls of blackberries. I also found a few small patches of blaeberries in the woods.

There are stiles, kissing gates, gates and paths which might be muddy at times . Long flights of steps and some steep sections too.
