Description

Edenbridge to Hever Station is on low-lying land, the Eden Valley, but further south goes through the hills of the High Weald. About ⅔ is off road, road splits evenly between Edenbridge, quiet rural roads and access only lanes. Roads and lanes very quiet, except 100m on Uckfield Rd and 300m in Markbeech which were just fairly quiet.

This route was created so that I could combine pioneering this Slow Way with finding a walkable ending for EdeTon 1, not because EdeCow 1 looks problematic. But, on paper, this route has advantages: passing Hever Station and close to Cowden Station (750m - near by local standards); two pubs serving food (not one); and avoiding two short but no-pavement, no-verge stretches of the B2026 from EdeCow 1.

In some places Ordnance Survey apps and maps are not up to date with moved Rights of Way (Dec 2023). The plotted line is accurate though, mini maps also attached.
A. Burnt Oak Farm, Edenbridge. Mapped RoW bafflingly goes right through two buildings, there’s a perfectly good track alongside which Edenbridge Council’s own walking leaflets use.
B. The big one: between Lydens Lane and Hever Station on the ‘Eden Valley Walk’. Moved PRoW avoids the converted farm buildings and a boggy, very stiff and heavy field gate. Coming from Edenbridge the finger post and kissing gate do help, but it’s less clear if coming from Hever end. Some “Footpath has been moved” signs wouldn’t go amiss there or in the middle, now defunct, section where E V Walk arrows are still on display.
C. Hartdene Barns on Hartfield Rd - B2026, W of Cowden Station. Diversion around building works. It’s small, well signed and you keep off the roadway. Map attached but diversion not on route/GPX file as hopefully it's temporary.
D. Fields just outside Cowden. The (muddy) path runs outside the fields not across, it’s obvious on the ground

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.
