Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Bostal Boy

19 May 2022 Spring

Leg Two of a walk from Uckfield to East Grinstead on 18th May 2022.

This took me about three and a half hours with a brief stop at Forest Row. The route is through Ashdown Forest and is for the most part pretty easily followed. I was relying on SatNav to make sure I chose the correct path between Londonderry Farm and the MOD training facililty at Pippingford Park. The path is along the fence at the MOD site so easily followed.

Crossing the A22 there is supposed to be a bridle path to pick up the other side of the road. I didn't find it, but headed through woods in the general direction for 100m to pick up the traced Slow Way path running parallel to the road. Ashdown Forest can be a bit confusing as there are loads of paths, but not always exactly as marked on the map.

The route passes through the expensive-looking Ashdown Park Hotel and Country Club, where there will be facilities.

From Ashdown Park to Forest Row, the section through the woods at Broadstone Warren is fairly straight forward, the section through the golf course less easily followed - I was relying on SatNav again. But I always find golf courses confusing.

The centre of Forest Row has all the facilities, shops, cafes and public WCs. From there to East Grinstead the path is through fields and past farms. Lots of stiles and gates. I was surprised that the route doesn't use the Forest Way at this point - more direct and accessible. However the chosen route was quite enjoyable nonetheless.

I enjoyed this route, nice and dry when walked, nice countryside through the Forest but not too remote.
