Help connect East Grinstead
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of East Grinstead’s Slow Ways.

I walked from East Grinstead to Crowborough on a somewhat misty January weekday. The path was beguilingly open at one end but the other had a padlocked gate wrapped with barbed wire, Photos 1 and (map) 6. An overgrown and sharply narrowing pavement on a bend in College Lane, East Grinstead, Photo 5, forced two more unsafe crossings but could so easily have been avoided via the historic High Street. Unsafe fast B-road sections: B2026 near Chuck Hatch (single verge becomes spiny scrub halfway along, Photo 4, nearside traffic is coming around a blind bend and included 2 HGVs in just a few minutes); B2188 near Friars Gate (actually including a blind bend, no verge and beside a steep bank. Photos 2 and 3 are from nearby at ///dodges.sunflower.reconnect nearby. It didn't feel safe to take a photo)....

The Forest Way bike path was very direct, easy and busy with friendly locals. Low winter morning sun aligned with the path which was magical combined with the mist (Photo 14). After leaving the bike path near Forest Row I had an encounter with a large herd of curious alpacas (Photo 13), but they didn't want to get close. Then another short, but somewhat more uncomfortable section on a fast road, the B2288, with a blind S bend and no verge at all (Photo 5). The last mile or so is another fairly busy and fast road, which was dull but it does at least have a good pavement. The bike path was samey as the views are hidden by trees. And of course the flip side of the roads and cycle path (together over 2/3) was a generally fast and easy walk in January during a wet winter (although after a dry week)....

Walk this routeHad a lovely walk, there were some parts that were inaccessible for wheelchair access as the path was muddy, however it was mostly flat. I would happily walk it again....

a nice flat walk in most places, moderate walk, however not accessible for wheelchair users...

Lovely walk easily accessible - stunning scenery. Recommend it. Moderate walk....

Walked on 11th March, this route is well traced on the map and pretty easy to follow on the ground. From Forest Row, the path heads into Ashdown Forest along farm tracks and across field paths. If you come off the route at Forest Row or Hartfield, you will find facilities in the villages but you pass nothing directly on the path....

A really lovely route between Horley and East Grinstead taking in some great footpaths and scenery that you wouldn’t expect to find under the flight path of a major international airport!...

The route is through Ashdown Forest and is for the most part pretty easily followed. Ashdown Forest can be a bit confusing as there are loads of paths, but not always exactly as marked on the map. From Ashdown Park to Forest Row, the section through the woods at Broadstone Warren is fairly straight forward, the section through the golf course less easily followed - I was relying on SatNav again....

Overall, I think it is a marginally better route from Ardingly Reservoir to West Hoathly. The route is quite strenuous, with ups and downs, mostly following footpaths and bridleways across small fields and through woodland....

It follows the Worth Way, a disused railway line from Three Bridges to East Grinstead which was closed in 1967. This can be avoided by exactly following National Cycle Route 21, as there is a ramped path from Church Road, Worth back down to the old railway line....

Walk this routeAll is the same except I have avoided the flight of steps on the path down to the old railway line from Maidenbower Drive....

About half of the route is walking alongside a road - around two miles at each end, although the two miles out of Edenbridge is mostly on a quiet/private road so it is not noticable (in both instances, taking a more off-road route would be a significant detour). All in a lovely walk to take, I didn't see anyone between Jules Wood and Larches Farm, and the level of road walking at either end means it is much less taxing than the 8 mile tag suggests....

This was just a poor timing of the day, but I had to return to the path/footpath intersection at 538804 , 135798 and take the footpath west across Saint Hill Farm (not clearly marked in the farm layout, so have confidence in your compass) to W Hoathly Road, follow the road south to 51.099594, -0.021536 (there's a small carpark area/sign back onto a field), and then head east back across the farm to 538758 , 135244, where there'll be a sign and you can rejoin the Slow Way/High Weald Landscape Trail going south. If it is still closed, I took the detour in which I walked along the south boundary of Giffard's Wood (it appears this is a common path as there's a vague route) - if you stick north of the "PRIVATE PROPERTY" signs whilst going east you'll be on the right track. It's a lengthy detour with a significant - if I'd known ahead of time that this section was blocked I think a better route might be to go south at Stone Hill House (following the Sussex Border Path, not the High Weald Landscape Trail), following to Bluebell Lane/Station Road, and then link back up to the original Slow Way via the instructions above. Picture 2-4: Detour 1 - start of detour, path at the end of Saint Hill Farm, end of detour Picture 6-8: Detour 2 - start of detour, path at the start of Bluebell Ln/Station Road, end of detour...

Route was accessible but you need a good mapping app. Exporting the route to Footpath app worked really well....

I recommend the bakery at Ardingly for bacon baps and the Cat in West Hoathly was open even though Google said they shut between 2 and 6pm....
DaveyG
It's a direct route and once on the Worth Way section (between Maidenbower and East Grinstead) you will only be crossing a few roads and not walking on them. Quite interesting on the Worth Way and more varied that some other former Railway Paths have walked on, get views of the fields to either side and good facilities in Crawley Down a few miles in....
