Description
This route avoids the busy roads used by EasNor 1. From East Ham to the A13 is mostly along quiet residential roads, there may be some undropped kerbs here. After the A13 footbridge (with ramp) it cuts through a retail part to join a network of joint foot/cycle ways alongside some very big roads but set back into ribbons of woodland, which makes a big difference although there is still traffic noise and in unfavourable weather maybe fumes. These end a little way north of a large junction at Gallions Roundabout. From here the Slow Way joins the Jubilee Greenway and the Capital Ring - two well established walking routes with signs. There is road walking on pavements but this starts with a bridge over the docks and across to London City Airport. Walk on the western side for the best views. Turning off at Fishguard Way through the fairly new Galleons Estate and onto the path alongside the River Thames. Stick right beside the river, pressing a buzzer to get through a gate at one point. The route turns off through Royal Victoria Gardens to use a safe road crossing of Pier Road, it can be busy with traffic queueing for the Woolwich Ferry. But you could also stay beside the Thames until the exit just after the park if you are willing to negotiate the traffic and a flight of steps.
Royal Victoria Gardens and two gates on the Thames side path will be locked after dark. Instead stay on Albert Way then Pier Road, which is very clear on any map.
There are public toilets in Gooseley Playing Fields and Royal Victoria Gardens and "community toilets" with free public access in Sainsburys in the retail park next to the A13. There are places to eat in that retail park and a Co-op on Gallions Reach Roundabout.
I think this route will probably be accessible for wheelchairs as there are dropped steps, and ramps, no flights of steps but there is at least one point north of Barking Road where the dropped kerbs aren't dropped all the way down.
There is a long section of the Thames Path which could have been on this route but is closed for a year or more due to large building works. The Inner London Ramblers would put any news about that on their website - Capital Ring updates - section 15. Although this route does have more road walking it avoids a narrow footbridge and doesn't have the views down the length of two docks towards the setting sun and London City Airport. Time it right and you'll get a treat as planes come into land. https://innerlondonramblers.org.uk/

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

21 Nov 2024Daisy's description was very helpful and accurate. I enjoyed this route and diverted to Sainsbury's in Beckton Triangle Retail Park. The cycle routes to Gallions were quiet. The bridge over the Royal Albert Dock had interesting views of planes landing and taking off. I finished the walk by using the foot tunnel to get to Woolwich Arsenal station.

29 Jul 2024This walk starts at East Ham Station, the first few miles are through residential streets. The walk then crosses the busy A13 and then goes into Beckton. The highlights are the view from the Steve Redgrave bridge and the Thames path. Nice easy walk which finishes at North Woolwich, you can then take the Ferry to Woolwich for extra excitement!.

02 Dec 2023Thames Path. Planes coming in to land at City Airport across the royal docks. Wooded path - some noise from road but surprisingly relaxing. Cut through the retail park - chance for coffee or burger. Views of queueing A13 traffic from the footbridge. Quiet backstreets with traffic restrictions. Busy Barking Road, buildings from East Ham's heyday and lovely cooking smells. More backstreets, slightly busier. East Ham High St and the tube. Not too shabby!
I tested from North Woolwich to Gallions Reach Retail Park in January 2023 (overlap with some other Slow Ways) and from Gallions Roundabout to East Ham in December 2023.
