Connect North Woolwich with Slow Ways
We’re creating a network of walking routes that connect all of Britain’s towns, cities and national parks
more walks and reviews are needed to fully connect North Woolwich to the verified network. Can you give a hike and help?

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of North Woolwich’s Slow Ways.

Nice easy walk which finishes at North Woolwich, you can then take the Ferry to Woolwich for extra excitement!...

This walk included a short section along the Thames path at North Woolwich through Beckton and on to Barking....

The route description suggests it’s to avoid steps, but there were plenty of steps in the Gardens....

After the roundabout there is pavement walking right beside a very busy road, not nice. Apart from a section of road walking, this was a very pleasant walk, very open, with good views....

Busy Barking Road, buildings from East Ham's heyday and lovely cooking smells. I tested from North Woolwich to Gallions Reach Retail Park in January 2023 (overlap with some other Slow Ways) and from Gallions Roundabout to East Ham in December 2023....

Walk this routeAnd as I was crossing the docks (on the Sir Steve Redgrave Bridge) a plane came in to land overhead at London City Airport, which is so close that the plane was very low indeed, quite a thrill!...

Walk this routeThis route was designed to remove some of the busy A road walking that blights NorDag 1. It does that and adds some more Thames Path and pleasant greenspaces, but the roads are still fairly noticeable....

Walk this routeDon't walk this route unless you just love walking beside huge roads with fast traffic and lots of air pollution. Walked in winter 22/23 from North Woolwich to near Greatfield Park then abandoned it, I'd already had enough big roads, just couldn't face the long stretch on the pavement of the multi lane A13....

I walked starting at North Woolwich and almost did a detour soon after starting, assuming I could not go through the gate in the photo - however it is open to those using the capital ring path and opens for you when you press the button, it just looks uninviting....
Dan Barron
Slightly indirect but worth it because a lot is off road, following the Capital Ring, which is well signposted....

It is enjoyable to walk on good paths beginning at the River Thames River Path and proceeding via local paths and road....

This route is disappointing in a few ways but primarily because it's unsafe at the Gallions Roundabout, it sends you around the south eastern sides which appears to have dropped kerbs and be usable and then up the Royal Docks Road, the pavement, then verge both peter out and there's no way out but back....

A section of it by the Excel Arena is temporarily closed but having diverted around to the other side I can vouch for the connection and it was not worth a fail. The meandering route through a residential area in North Woolwich at the end seemed rather pointless when we walked it on a Saturday afternoon as the main, direct road was not busy at all. Overall though, this a well conceived and plotted route....
David Sanderson
At the southern end the route takes you round a somewhat preposterous loop, and for that indirectness it loses a star....

There were some building works at Trafalgar Way/Charter St (pedestrian diversion but fairly trivial) and a larger one just east of the Excel Centre, longer diversion via Victoria Dock Rd (but there was a map)....

The other reviews are right, the round tunnel entrance building is well hidden, and then the stairs door is further hidden....

Dannyash added Planor two, a new walk from Plaistow to North Woolwich
Walk this routeThis route follows the very last bit of the Capital Ring through the Woolwich Foot tunnel and is therefore well signposted, although as has been said before not the easiest to find from the South Side. A pretty unique experience being able to walk under the Thames (only a few places you can do it) and was very quiet when I did it....

Route follows a section of the Capital Ring and is therefore very well signposted and mainly through parks away from roads....

This route was fairly easy to follow, but got tedious and noisy on the midsection (into Canning Town and through into Blackwall). Enjoyed the view of the Lyle's Golden Syrup factory, O2 Arena. The route did the job....

Not the most direct, but it goes along the water a lot of the time and along some nice back streets. Felt safe throughout. Only significant access issue is that right towards the end there are steps up onto a bridge - I couldn't see an alternative way up....

This route isn’t drawn quite accurately enough and could suggest the use of a small section of the Aspen Way slip road at Preston’s Road junction (Blackwall) which barely has a pavement - a small redrawing using Baffin Way would make it useable, although it also uses some very industrial roads in the Royal Docks for which there are probably safer alternatives (see Cannor two suggestion)....

Walk this routeIf you're travelling north-to-south, the first third or so of the route is through the Woolwich Foot Tunnel, which is well-let and safe any time of day or night (see photo)....
